Intermittent responses taking seven seconds or more do not, by themselves, show that Cloudflare timed out or identify whether Cloudflare, Traefik, K3s, the application, or a network segment is responsible. The useful next step is to compare several slow requests with nearby fast requests for the same route, then line up their timings and status codes across the client, Cloudflare, and Traefik.
What a seven-second response does—and does not—tell you
Cloudflare documents a default Proxy Read Timeout of 125 seconds for the 524 response path. A successful response that takes seven seconds is below that limit, so its duration alone is not evidence of a Cloudflare timeout. A 524 means Cloudflare connected to the origin but did not receive a timely response; a 522 indicates a TCP connection problem. Check the actual status rather than inferring either error from elapsed time.
Cloudflare’s Origin Analytics timing is also broader than application execution time. For requests that need the origin, it starts when Cloudflare decides to send the request upstream and ends when response headers arrive. The interval can include DNS resolution, TCP and TLS handshakes, request transmission, origin processing, response receipt, and—when enabled—routing services. It can therefore be higher than an application-only duration.
How to capture useful slow and fast samples
Collect multiple slow requests and nearby fast requests for the same path. Keep the comparison as consistent as possible: use the same method, request body and approximate response size, and note whether each request was a cache hit or miss. Record the exact UTC time, client location, HTTP status, relevant response headers, and the Cloudflare CF-RAY identifier.

- Use browser developer tools to save a HAR, or measure requests with
curl. - Separate DNS lookup, connection, TLS setup, time to first byte, and total transfer time rather than recording only one overall duration.
- Keep response size and redirects in view: a slow total transfer can have a different cause from a slow first byte.
For a repeatable command-line sample, replace the example URL with the affected route:
curl -sS -o /dev/null -w 'dns=%{time_namelookup}s connect=%{time_connect}s tls=%{time_appconnect}s first_byte=%{time_starttransfer}s total=%{time_total}s status=%{http_code}n' 'https://app.example.com/affected-path'
A direct-origin request can be a useful controlled comparison, but it is not automatically equivalent to a visitor request through Cloudflare. Preserve the hostname and TLS behavior; for example, curl --resolve app.example.com:443:ORIGIN_IP https://app.example.com/affected-path connects to a chosen origin IP while retaining the URL hostname. This test does not reproduce the client-to-edge route or all Cloudflare-side behavior.

What to compare in Cloudflare
In Speed > Origin Analytics, select the affected time range and compare the endpoint’s origin response-time percentiles—p50, p95, and p99—with the individual slow and fast samples where possible. These percentiles summarize the selected data; they are not a diagnosis of this particular cluster. First confirm whether a request was cache-hit or origin-bound, because the origin timing applies to requests Cloudflare sends upstream.
Compare originResponseStatus with edgeResponseStatus. They can differ when Cloudflare wraps an origin failure in an edge response such as 520, 522, or 524. A slow but successful response should not be labeled a timeout unless the status and corresponding logs support that conclusion.

What to inspect in Traefik access logs
Use Traefik JSON access logs for the affected router and match entries by timestamp, route, status, and request details. The fields most useful for separating work across the proxy boundary are:
Duration: overall request processing duration.OriginDuration: duration attributed to the upstream response.Overhead: time attributed to Traefik processing rather than the origin duration.OriginStatusandDownstreamStatus: the upstream and client-facing statuses.
The two status fields can differ if middleware changes a response. An empty or zero origin status can indicate that handling occurred before a backend was reached. Confirm that the affected router is actually covered: Traefik observability signals can be enabled globally or at narrower scopes, and router-level visibility depends on the relevant signal being enabled.

How to interpret mismatched timings
Use matched requests and timing boundaries to decide which segment to investigate next. Treat these patterns as hypotheses to verify, not as proof from one metric.

Cloudflare origin time and Traefik OriginDuration both rise on the same slow requests. |
The application or backend, its resource use or dependencies, and the network path between Traefik and that backend. |
| Cloudflare origin time is high, but Traefik reports a short request. | The portion before Traefik, including DNS, connection and TLS setup, origin reachability, and any enabled routing or tiered-cache path. |
Traefik Duration is high while OriginDuration is comparatively short. |
Traefik processing, middleware, response transfer, and the boundaries used by each measurement. |
| Cloudflare and Traefik timings are short, but the client’s total time is high. | Client-to-edge timing, body transfer, the client network, redirects, and browser request dependencies. |
Do not compare a Cloudflare cache hit with a Traefik origin request as if they represented the same work. Likewise, a time-window average can hide the intermittent requests that matter; use endpoint-level percentiles alongside specific slow and fast samples.

If Cloudflare Tunnel is in the request path
If the deployment uses Tunnel, inspect cloudflared logs alongside Traefik logs and check whether cloudflared can reach its configured local service. Tunnel health alone does not establish that the service behind it is reachable. A stopped service, protocol mismatch, or incorrect port can break that local connection even while the tunnel itself appears healthy.
A practical order of operations
- Build the sample set. Capture several slow and nearby fast requests for one route, with UTC timestamps, status, cache outcome,
CF-RAY, method, and response size. - Break down client timing. Use a HAR or
curlto distinguish DNS, connection, TLS, first-byte, and total-transfer delays. - Check Cloudflare’s view. In Speed > Origin Analytics, compare the same endpoint and time range, review the p50/p95/p99 values, and pair origin and edge statuses.
- Match Traefik entries. Compare
Duration,OriginDuration,Overhead, and both status fields for the corresponding requests. - Follow the segment that diverges. Use the timing pattern above to choose the next logs or telemetry to inspect; if Tunnel is used, include cloudflared-to-service connectivity.
The cause cannot be determined from the reported duration alone. A deployment’s versions, cache behavior, status codes, logs, and matched timing samples are needed to establish which segment is slow; exact observability options can vary with the deployed Cloudflare and Traefik versions.
