To keep a React chat feed from jumping, preserve the identity and visual position of the message in view when older messages are prepended, and follow new output only when the reader was already near the bottom. With TanStack Virtual, the documented pattern combines end anchoring, stable message IDs, and conditional append-following. React Virtuoso offers a higher-level component API with inverse-scroll and follow-output controls. Neither library promises jump-free behavior in every browser or application.
Why chat feeds need different scroll behavior
A conventional list usually grows in one direction. A chat or AI feed changes at both ends: new messages append at the bottom, while older history is prepended at the top. It may also contain variable-height messages that grow as text streams in or images load. A robust implementation must preserve the reader’s place during each of these changes without pulling someone away from history they are reading.
TanStack Virtual describes this as a distinct scrolling contract: “Chat, AI streams, logs, and other reverse feeds have a different scrolling contract than a standard top-anchored list.” TanStack’s chat guide documents one approach to that contract.

TanStack Virtual is headless: it provides virtualization behavior, while your application supplies the markup and styles. Start with a scroll container that has a constrained height and overflow: auto; without a genuinely scrollable element, the virtualizer cannot manage the viewport as intended. For the chat behavior, configure the virtualizer with the message count, the scroll element, an item-size estimate, and a stable key function. The documented options for this pattern include anchorTo: 'end', followOnAppend: true, and a deliberate scrollEndThreshold. Choose the threshold based on how your interface should feel, then test it; an example value in documentation is not a universal recommendation. Use persistent message IDs as keys
Return each message’s persistent ID from getItemKey, rather than using its array index. When history is prepended, every existing message’s index shifts. A stable ID lets the virtualizer recognize the same message after that shift.

Preserve the visible message when prepending history
Keep existing message keys unchanged as older messages are inserted at the beginning. With end anchoring, TanStack Virtual documents capturing the visible item before the data change, finding that same keyed item afterward, and adjusting the scroll offset to keep it in the same visual position. Index keys undermine that identity-based behavior because the old messages acquire new indices.
Follow new output only when the reader is already at the end
With followOnAppend: true, the virtualizer follows appended output only if the viewport was already at the end within the configured scrollEndThreshold before the append. A reader who has scrolled upward to inspect older messages is therefore not automatically dragged back to the newest message. Keep a “Jump to latest” control available when the reader is away from the end, and connect it to the documented scrollToEnd() method.

Choose initial positioning separately
Opening at the newest message is a separate decision from following future output. If the product should open at the latest message, call scrollToEnd() after mount. That initial positioning does not replace conditional follow-on-append behavior or a user-invoked jump control.
Account for messages whose height changes
Virtualized lists need an initial size estimate and a way to account for actual item sizes. TanStack Virtual exposes dynamic measurement; its API documents keeping an end-pinned viewport pinned when the last item grows. This is relevant to streamed text, but a growing final message should be tested in your own layout rather than treated as a universal guarantee.

React Virtuoso supports fixed item height, a default height, and per-item height estimates; measured heights replace estimates. Its API also documents combining follow-output with the imperative autoscrollToBottom() method when an image loads. These are documented mechanisms, not proof that every late layout change will be jump-free.

Choose based on the layout control your application needs, the amount of integration work you want to own, message-height variation, inverse-loading behavior, and session-restoration requirements. The React Virtuoso API reference documents its component controls, including inverse scrolling, follow output, sizing, and state restoration. Do not infer a performance winner without measurements on your own application.

Verify the behavior across real feed changes
Test the distinct user journeys and layout transitions, not only the initial render:

- Append messages while the viewport is pinned at the end, then confirm it follows.
- Append messages while the reader is scrolled upward, then confirm their reading position is not pulled down.
- Prepend older history while the reader is near the top, and check that the same visible message remains in place.
- Let the final message grow during streaming and check the end-pinned view.
- Load an image after its message first renders and check how the viewport responds.
- Restore a prior session and verify that the intended message and scroll position return.
- Scroll quickly through variable-height items to assess how estimates and measurements affect the experience.
