Use a conventional, nonconductive thermal paste made for electronics; you do not need liquid metal for a routine PS4 repaste. The replacement requires a substantial teardown, and the exact steps and tools depend on the console’s CUH model. Identify that model before choosing a repair guide—or use PlayStation’s repair support if you do not want to open the system.
Which thermal paste should you use in a PS4?
Choose an ordinary thermal paste labeled for electronics or processor use. Apply a small amount to the processor after removing the old compound, following the instructions for your model. The iFixit PlayStation 4 replacement guide describes this basic process.
iFixit’s PS4 Pro comparison names Arctic MX-4 thermal paste as one example and also mentions Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut liquid metal. Those examples do not establish a universal best product, or show that liquid metal is a suitable interchangeable choice for beginners. For a straightforward repair, stick with conventional paste rather than treating liquid metal as a like-for-like alternative.

Check your PS4 model before opening it
PS4 and PS4 Pro revisions can differ in their internal layout and retaining hardware. Read the CUH model number on the console and use a guide that explicitly covers that variant. For example, iFixit’s PS4 Pro CUH-7200 thermal paste guide covers CUH-7200, CUH-7215B, CUH-7216B, and CUH-7217. It is not a universal guide for every PS4 Pro generation.
A model-specific tool list may include a TR8 Torx security driver and Phillips drivers. Check the exact guide before buying tools: the required set varies with the console revision and the amount of disassembly.

What the replacement involves
Repasting is an internal repair, not an external cleaning task. The standard PS4 guide involves removing the outer cover and internal parts to reach the motherboard and processor, cleaning away the old paste, applying new compound, and reinstalling the components. The sequence and fasteners differ by model, so use the matching guide rather than relying on a generic teardown.

- Review the guide and tools. Gather the drivers and other tools listed for that model before starting. Do not assume one general-purpose kit will fit every revision.
- Open the console and reach the processor. Follow the model-specific disassembly sequence; this requires removing internal parts.
- Clean and repaste. Remove the old compound, then apply a small amount of conventional electronics thermal paste as directed by the guide.
- Reassemble in the guide’s sequence. Reinstall the board and other components, then check the console’s operation.
Safety, warranty, and service options
Sony’s PS4 Safety Guide for the CUH-72XXB series says, “Never disassemble or modify the system or accessories.” It also states that the system has no user-serviceable components and warns of electrical-shock and laser-radiation risks. Opening the console may affect warranty coverage; warranty language and consumer rights depend on your region and the console’s current status. Check the applicable terms before beginning.

Replacing old paste is a maintenance procedure, but the cited repair and comparison guides do not establish a representative temperature drop, fan-noise reduction, paste lifespan, or success rate across PS4 models. The console’s symptoms alone are not proof that thermal paste is the cause, and a repaste should not be presented as a guaranteed cure for loud fan noise or heat.
