Professional Counter-Strike 2 data shows the AWP accounting for a smaller share of recorded kills in early 2024 than at the start of 2021, followed by a partial recovery through the second quarter of 2026. That trend does not, by itself, show that teams buy the rifle less often or have changed their CT positions. It supports a narrower conclusion: the AWP’s share of kill output fell and then rose partway back; whether defensive setups changed requires round-by-round evidence.

What the AWP numbers actually measure

EsportsOdds’ 2026 analysis of professional S- and A-tier match data reports the AWP’s share of recorded kills at three points in its quarterly series:

Period AWP share of recorded kills What the figure indicates
Start of 2021 13.3% Earlier baseline in the series
Q1 2024 9.19% Low point in the publisher’s quarterly series
Q2 2026 10.89% Partial recovery from the low, still below the 2021 baseline

These are shares of recorded kills, not AWP purchase rates, the percentage of rounds in which an AWP appears, time spent holding one, or the number of dedicated snipers. The analysis uses per-match aggregates rather than parsed demos, so it does not reveal each player’s position, the round context, or the tactical plan behind a kill. See EsportsOdds’ CS2 weapon-usage series for its methodology and figures.

Does the decline prove CT setups are changing?

No. The kill-share figures do not establish a causal link between AWP usage and defensive positioning. A lower share of kills could reflect changes in purchases, opportunities, player roles, opponents, or other match conditions; the cited aggregate data does not distinguish among those explanations. Nor does it show which angles teams defended or how quickly they rotated.

It is reasonable to hypothesize that a team producing fewer AWP kills might lean more on rifle crossfires, utility to block sightlines, flexible rotations, or a player who switches between the AWP and rifle. But those are tactical possibilities, not findings in the kill-share reports. Confirming a setup change means examining team and map demos rather than inferring it from one weapon’s kill share.

What the March 2026 reload comparison adds

EsportsOdds’ comparison around the March 2026 reload update puts the AWP at roughly 10–11% of kills and describes output as flat to slightly higher after the update. It measures kill output, not pick rate, and does not show that the update caused teams to buy the weapon more or less often. The comparison therefore offers no evidence of a further fall in AWP kill output after the change. Read the publisher’s reload-update analysis.

What Valve’s update notes do—and do not—show

Valve’s July 15, 2025 Competitive-mode update notes a $50 team award for CTs for each Terrorist eliminated. Valve also documented AWP animation work in 2025. These are relevant game-change details, but the notes do not connect either change to AWP buying, kill share, or a particular defensive setup. They should not be treated as proof that Valve changes caused the observed trend. Valve’s Counter-Strike 2 update archive records the official changes.

How to verify a setup change in match demos

To test whether a team’s defense has actually adapted, compare rounds from the same team on the same map across a defined period. Track evidence that directly describes decisions, not just final kills:

  1. Purchases and economy: Record how often the CT side buys an AWP, including the economy and round type. This tests purchase frequency rather than kill output.
  2. Starting positions and opening duels: Note the initial CT positions and who takes early fights. This can show whether a sniper angle or a rifle crossfire is being used.
  3. Utility around sightlines: Compare how teams deny, isolate, or retake long sightlines with utility.
  4. Rotations and survival: Follow when the AWPer rotates, whether the player survives, and whether the weapon is saved when a round is lost.
  5. Hybrid roles on constrained buys: Check whether a player who often uses the AWP switches to a rifle when the team’s economy limits purchases.

HLTV describes its sniping attribute as based on AWP and SSG 08 kills and multi-kills, with results indicating rifler, hybrid, or full-time sniper tendencies. That can help characterize a player’s role, but it does not identify CT positions, purchases in a particular round, or team setups. HLTV’s sniping-role description is useful for role context, not a substitute for demo review.

Bottom line on the claim

The AWP’s share of professional recorded kills declined from 13.3% at the start of 2021 to a reported low of 9.19% in Q1 2024, then recovered to 10.89% in Q2 2026. That is a partial rebound in kill share, not proof of fewer AWP purchases or reshaped CT defenses. The headline’s tactical claim remains unverified without map-by-map demo evidence.
