Start by finding the Blu-ray player’s exact model number, then look for a replacement remote listed for that model. If an original is unavailable, a universal remote may work—but check that it supports your player and the menu and playback functions you need, not just power.
1. Find your Blu-ray player’s model number
Check the label on the back or underside of the player, its original paperwork, or the manufacturer’s support page. The model number is the key to finding a remote that is actually listed for your device. For example, Panasonic’s support and parts page provides links to parts and accessories as well as a model and serial-number lookup.
2. Look for a model-specific replacement remote
Search the player manufacturer’s support or parts site using the exact model number. If you shop through a third-party seller, compare the remote’s compatible-model list with the number on your player. Do not assume that a remote described as suitable for Blu-ray players will work with every model; current stock and cross-brand replacement compatibility depend on the specific product and seller.
3. Consider a universal remote, but verify its functions
A universal remote can be a practical alternative if its compatibility information includes your player or its manufacturer. Sony notes that some Sony universal remotes can be programmed to control Blu-ray players using the DVD button, and that some non-Sony remotes may also support Blu-ray players. This is not a guarantee of compatibility with every player.

Before buying, check whether the remote supports the controls you use. At minimum, look for directional navigation and OK or Enter, playback, stop and pause, chapter skip, and disc or menu controls. Sony cautions that some functions may not be accessible even when a remote is compatible with a player. A remote that turns the player on may still leave you unable to navigate a disc menu.
4. Know when a learning remote can help
A learning remote captures infrared commands from a working remote. Sony describes this as a way for a learning remote to learn infrared frequencies. Because your original remote is lost, you generally cannot teach commands from it; this option is useful only if you can use another compatible working remote or the learning remote has an appropriate code or setup method.

5. Treat a phone app as a model-specific fallback
Check the exact player model, phone operating system, and network requirements before relying on an app. Panasonic’s Remote 2011 app page names five compatible models and requires the player and phone to use a suitable shared Wi-Fi network. Panasonic’s page also says the service ended on June 30, 2020: an existing installation may continue to work, but future operation is not guaranteed. Panasonic’s broader compatibility page separately lists select 2011 and 2012 models. These legacy examples do not establish app support for other players.

A TV remote using HDMI-CEC or a USB keyboard or mouse may offer some control on particular models, but neither is a dependable general replacement for a Blu-ray remote. Check your player’s manual for supported control methods and any setup requirements before counting on them.

Choose based on what you need to control
- Exact replacement: Best when the manufacturer or seller lists the remote for your precise player model.
- Universal remote: Check both model compatibility and access to the functions you need, especially navigation and disc menus.
- Learning remote: Consider it when you have a working compatible remote to teach it, or can confirm an appropriate code-based setup.
- Phone app or other-device control: Use only when the player’s model documentation confirms support and the requirements are practical for your setup.
