For a PS4 Safe Mode update, format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT, create PS4/UPDATE folders, and save Sony’s official update file there as PS4UPDATE.PUP. In Safe Mode, choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device. Do not choose the reinstall option unless you intend to erase the console.
Prepare the USB drive and update file
Sony’s manual update instructions accept a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Sony does not specify a required brand or capacity. Download the official PS4 update file from Sony’s PS4 system software page, then arrange the drive exactly as follows:
- Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting erases existing files, so copy anything you need off the drive first.
- Create a folder named
PS4at the root of the USB drive. - Inside
PS4, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Save the downloaded update file in
PS4/UPDATEand name itPS4UPDATE.PUP. Use the uppercase names shown.
The resulting path should be PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP. Use the official update file, not a file from another source; Sony warns against installing update data that it has not provided.

Install the ordinary system update in Safe Mode
- Turn the PS4 fully off.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after the second beep, which follows the first beep by several seconds, to start Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device, then follow the on-screen prompts.
This is the routine update path. It uses the official update file and is not the Safe Mode factory-reset option.

Update or reinstall? Choose the right file and menu option
Sony’s update and reinstallation processes use the same general folder structure and filename, but they require different downloaded files and different Safe Mode choices.

Do not use the reinstallation file for an ordinary update. Reinstallation is a separate recovery procedure; back up data if possible before selecting it. Sony’s PS4 system software instructions explain the file choices, and its Safe Mode reinstallation guide warns that reinstalling deletes console data.

If the PS4 does not recognize the USB file
- Check the format: The drive must be FAT32 or exFAT, as specified in Sony’s Safe Mode update instructions.
- Check the path: The folders must be
PS4and thenUPDATE, starting from the root of the USB drive. - Check the filename: The file must be named
PS4UPDATE.PUPand placed insideUPDATE. Use the uppercase folder and file names Sony specifies. - Check which file you downloaded: Use the update file for Update System Software; use the separate reinstallation file only for Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software).
- Check the source and file integrity: Use Sony’s official download. If the update may be corrupted, Sony’s SU-30696-4 troubleshooting guidance recommends retrying an internet update if possible, downloading the latest file again, and attempting the Safe Mode update.
If the manual update still fails, Sony says reinstallation may be needed. Treat it as a last step because it erases all console data.
