If your tablet has no sound, first raise the media volume while audio is playing, then test another app and check where the audio is being sent. These quick checks can distinguish a muted app or connected accessory from a problem with the built-in speaker.
1. Raise the volume while audio is playing
Start a song or video, then press the tablet’s volume-up button. Changing volume during playback helps ensure you are adjusting media rather than a separate alert setting.
On iPad, the volume buttons adjust alerts, sound effects, songs, and other media. You can also check the volume control in Control Center. If audio is audible but unusually quiet, check whether a built-in speaker volume limit is restricting it. Apple’s guidance is available in its iPad sound settings and iPad user guide.

Play audio in a second app. If sound works there, check the silent app’s own volume, mute, or audio controls, and make sure the content itself is not muted. Lenovo’s advice for its Yoga Smart Tab similarly recommends checking an app’s sound settings when the problem occurs in a specific application: Lenovo app sound troubleshooting.

If multiple apps are silent, continue with the tablet’s output and speaker checks.
3. Check where the audio is going
A tablet can send sound to paired Bluetooth headphones or a speaker instead of its built-in speaker. Disconnect an accessory you are not using, or select the tablet as the playback destination.

On iPad
Open the playback controls from the app, Lock Screen, or Control Center. Tap the Playback Destination control and select iPad or the Bluetooth accessory you intend to use. Apple describes this control in its iPad audio playback guidance.

If you want sound through headphones or a speaker, confirm that it is connected and selected, then raise the volume on both the tablet and the accessory. Panasonic’s Android tablet Bluetooth guidance also recommends checking the selected output and both volume controls.

4. Check mute and notification settings without confusing them with media volume
On iPad, check whether Silent mode is on if alerts or sound effects are missing. Silent mode does not mute media such as music, podcasts, movies, and TV shows. Do Not Disturb suppresses calls, alerts, and notifications; it is not a general media mute switch. Apple explains these distinctions in its iPad volume and sound guide.
Android menus and controls vary by manufacturer and software version. If you use an Android tablet, look for its maker’s guidance for sound, volume, and notification settings rather than assuming every model has the same menu path.

5. Make sure the speaker opening is clear
Remove a case or film temporarily if it might cover the speaker opening. Check for visible blockage. If debris is present, Apple recommends gently cleaning the opening with a clean, dry, small soft-bristled brush. Do not use liquids or sharp tools, or push debris farther into the opening. 6. When to contact the manufacturer or a repair provider
If several apps remain silent after you check volume, app controls, audio destination, and the speaker opening, the issue may need a hardware assessment rather than another settings change. Apple says: “If you don’t hear any sound, or if your speaker button on the Ringtone and Alerts slider is dimmed, your speaker may need a service.” Contact your tablet’s manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the problem persists.
