To connect a compatible Samsung Smart TV to Google Home, first add the TV to SmartThings, then link SmartThings in the Google Home app. You’ll authorize the Samsung account used for SmartThings and select the correct SmartThings location. A separate Google streaming device is not required for this setup.
Before you connect: check the TV and SmartThings location
Samsung’s stated requirement is: “Your TV must be connected through SmartThings to use it with Google Assistant.” Samsung’s current US setup instructions describe linking SmartThings through Google Home; Samsung’s Hong Kong support page also describes the SmartThings requirement and basic voice-control examples.
Compatibility depends on the exact TV model, not just the Samsung brand. In the SmartThings app, open the Add device flow and search by product name or model number. Samsung says a device that does not appear in this search is not compatible with SmartThings. See Samsung’s SmartThings compatibility guidance.
Make sure the TV is added to the SmartThings location you intend to authorize with Google Home. Google Home controls devices registered to the location selected during linking.

How to link SmartThings in Google Home

In SmartThings, add the compatible Samsung TV and confirm that it appears under the intended location.

Open Google Home and go to Settings > Works with Google.

Search for SmartThings and select it.

Sign in with the Samsung account used for SmartThings, then authorize the connection.

Select the SmartThings location that contains the TV, and choose the compatible devices to link.

Assign the TV to a room in Google Home, then try a basic command such as asking Google Assistant to turn the TV on or off.
App labels and menus can vary by version and region. If you do not see Settings > Works with Google, look for the Google Home area used to link services or works-with-Google devices. Samsung’s older instructions describe a route through the Assistant tab and Home control, so those labels may appear in some versions. The important part is authorizing the same Samsung account and choosing the SmartThings location where the TV is registered.

What Google Assistant can control
Samsung describes Google Assistant control as basic compared with Bixby. Examples include turning the TV on or off and changing channels. The available commands can vary by model, software and region, so do not assume voice control includes every setting or app-navigation function.

The TV is missing from SmartThings: Search for its exact model number in SmartThings’ Add device flow. If it is not listed, Samsung’s compatibility guidance says the device is not compatible with SmartThings.

The TV is missing from Google Home: Check that it belongs to the SmartThings location selected during authorization. If it does not, add it to the intended location or repeat the linking process and select the location that contains it.

The TV appears but a command fails: Try a basic power or channel command. Samsung documents these as examples of basic control, but command support is model-dependent.

You are using an external streaming device for power: Check that the TV supports HDMI-CEC and that CEC is enabled. Google notes that CEC may be off by default and may not be available in every region. The Samsung manual for your specific model can identify the setting’s name and menu location. See Google’s instructions for turning a TV on and off with Google smart speakers or displays.

If the TV still does not appear or respond, consult the current Samsung software and troubleshooting information for your model; there is no single menu path established for every Samsung TV.

When an external Google streaming device is an alternative
If you want a separate streaming-device setup instead, Google documents voice control with supported devices such as Google TV Streamer (4K), used with a Google speaker or display. Power control through that route requires HDMI-CEC, and Google notes that CEC may be off by default or unavailable in some regions. The SmartThings linking method above does not require buying a streaming device.
Samsung Singapore also documents a Chromecast setup through Google Home, but that support page was last updated August 3, 2022. Treat it as an older alternative and check current device availability before choosing a specific Chromecast model. See Samsung Singapore’s Chromecast setup instructions.
