You can share an external hard drive over your home network only if your router supports USB storage sharing. Check the instructions for your exact router model first, then connect and power the drive, enable the router’s sharing service, and access it from a device on the same network using the protocol and address the router specifies.

Before connecting the drive, confirm router support

A USB port does not necessarily mean a router can share files. Find the router’s model number and check its official manual or support guide for USB storage sharing, supported drive formats, capacity limits, and power requirements. Setup menus and features vary by model. For example, TP-Link’s USB sharing guide and model support information describe model-dependent options; NETGEAR documents ReadySHARE for supported routers in its access instructions.

Check the drive format and power

Drive-format support is not universal. One TP-Link manual specifies FAT32 or NTFS, while TP-Link support notes that some models also support formats such as exFAT or HFS+. Use the requirements for your router rather than assuming a format will work. Do not reformat the drive unless necessary: reformatting can erase its contents, so back up important files first. See the TP-Link manual and format troubleshooting guidance.

Some external drives require their own power supply. Connect it if the drive needs it; a router’s USB port may not provide enough power for every drive or enclosure.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Connect the drive and enable sharing

  1. Connect the drive. Plug it into the router’s USB port and connect its separate power supply if required. Wait for the router to detect it. On the supported NETGEAR models described in the ReadySHARE instructions, some drives can take up to two minutes to become ready.
  2. Sign in to router settings. Use the router’s official instructions to find the storage-sharing settings; menu names and paths differ between models.
  3. Enable the storage-sharing service. Choose the service the router supports for local access, such as SMB or FTP, and configure user access controls if available. TP-Link’s current USB sharing guide recommends enabling Secure Sharing. ASUS’s FTP setup guide shows a different vendor-specific setup.
  4. Connect from a device on your home network. Follow the router’s instructions for its local network address and protocol. Depending on the model, access may use a router name or LAN address and SMB or FTP.

Open the shared drive from your computer

There is no single address or click path that works for every router. Use the hostname, LAN address, and protocol stated in your router’s instructions. Make sure the computer is connected to the same local network and that the sharing service is enabled. If the router requires an account, use the credentials and permissions configured in its settings.

TP-Link documents local access through SMB or FTP in its USB sharing guide; ASUS demonstrates FTP setup in its support guide, and NETGEAR explains access through ReadySHARE for supported routers in its instructions. These are examples, not interchangeable instructions: follow the guide for your own router.

  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive

Keep local sharing separate from remote access

Sharing the drive with devices on your home network does not automatically mean it is available from outside your home. Do not enable remote access just to use the drive locally. In the TP-Link setup described in its USB sharing guide, the remote USB option uses FTP and does not support SMB remotely. That limitation applies to the described setup, not necessarily to every router or model.

Troubleshoot common connection problems

The router does not detect the drive

  • Confirm that the exact router model supports USB storage sharing, not merely that it has a USB port.
  • Check the router’s supported filesystem and drive requirements against the drive’s format and specifications.
  • Connect the drive’s own power supply if it requires one, then allow time for detection.
  • Check the router’s documentation for compatibility limits involving external enclosures.

The drive appears, but you cannot open it

  • Verify that the router’s sharing service is enabled.
  • Use the local protocol and network address specified for that router.
  • Check that you are on the same network and that your account has permission to access the shared files.

Windows cannot connect over SMB

SMB problems can involve the router’s implementation or the computer’s security settings. Troubleshoot using your router’s model-specific instructions, such as TP-Link’s SMB troubleshooting page. Do not treat weakening Windows security as a routine first fix.

Safely disconnect the drive

If the router provides a safe-removal or disconnect option, use it before unplugging the drive. The cited TP-Link manual advises safely removing a USB device to reduce the risk of data damage. Follow your router’s own instructions for the removal control.
