You can control an AV receiver and media devices hidden in a closet, but the right method depends on what each device supports. For infrared (IR) equipment, an IR repeater is often the simplest route: place its receiver where your handheld remote can reach it and attach emitters to the hidden components. For other gear, a compatible RF remote, HDMI-CEC, a device’s external IR input, or a wired automation interface may work—but none should be assumed to control every component.

Start by checking what each device accepts

List the exact models of your receiver, source devices, display, and remotes. Then check their manuals for control options and the commands you need, such as power, input selection, volume, and playback. A setup can use more than one control method: for example, an IR repeater for the receiver and a network app for a source device.

Choose based on compatibility with each component, required functions, wiring and placement, setup effort, and what happens if a command or connection fails. Do not assume that one remote or connection will operate the entire system.

Use an IR repeater for compatible infrared devices

An IR repeater carries commands from a receiver placed outside the closet to emitters positioned at hidden devices. Before choosing a kit, confirm that the components accept IR, how many need emitters, and where the receiver and emitters can be installed. SANUS describes its ELM501 as supporting up to four components in closed cabinets; that is a product-specific specification, not a general limit for IR repeaters. SANUS ELM501 product information.

Some equipment can accept an external IR receiver directly, so a general repeater kit may not be necessary for every component. Denon says a separately sold remote-control receiver can control a compatible HEOS AVR installed where remote signals cannot reach. Check the exact receiver model and connection required in the Denon HEOS AVR documentation.

External IR connections are model-specific. For example, the AudioControl Concert AVR-6/AVR-8 manual describes a Zone 1 IR input and notes that connecting a Zone 1 IR receiver disables the receiver’s front-panel IR receiver. Consult the AudioControl manual before connecting an accessory or relying on the front-panel sensor.

Consider RF only when the remote and device are compatible

Radio-frequency (RF) remotes do not need a direct aiming path to the target, but the remote must be compatible with and paired to the device or its control system. RF support and range are not universal. As one provider-specific example, Xfinity says a paired XR2 or XR5 remote can use RF with the main X1 box up to 50 feet away; the feature does not apply to secondary X1 boxes or Player Minis. See Xfinity’s remote-control guidance for those limits. This example does not establish compatibility for other brands or AV equipment.

Use HDMI-CEC for selected commands across HDMI

HDMI Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) lets compatible devices send certain control commands over an HDMI connection. The available functions and setup labels vary by manufacturer, so enable CEC on the devices that need to communicate and test each desired command. Do not treat CEC as a guarantee that one remote will control every function on every device.

The AudioControl Concert AVR-6/AVR-8 manual provides a model-specific example: it instructs users to enable CEC on the selected output. It configures Audio Return Channel (ARC) separately for receiving audio from a display. CEC and ARC are related HDMI features, but enabling one does not mean the other is configured. Check the relevant device manuals and HDMI topology; the AudioControl manual documents its models’ settings.

Use wired automation when the equipment supports it

Some receivers offer interfaces such as RS-232 for control by an automation system. Before choosing this approach, confirm that the exact receiver has the required interface, that its command library supports the functions you need, and that your controller or integrator can work with it. AudioControl documents RS-232 control and a command library for the Concert AVR-6/AVR-8; that is a model-specific example, not a feature to assume on other receivers. See the AudioControl manual.

Set up and test the control path

  1. Inventory the equipment. Record the exact models of the receiver, source devices, display, and remotes. Look up control options in each manufacturer’s manual.
  2. Map commands to devices. Note which components need power, input, volume, or playback control, and which control method each one supports.
  3. For IR, plan receiver and emitter placement. Put the repeater’s receiver where the handheld remote can reach it; place emitters at the hidden components. Check device compatibility, kit wiring, and the number of outputs before buying.
  4. For external IR, verify the input and accessory. Confirm the exact connector and receiver accessory required by the component, and check whether connecting it changes built-in IR behavior.
  5. For RF, verify pairing and target support. Confirm that both the remote and the intended device or base system support the same RF control method.
  6. For CEC, enable and test functions one at a time. Turn on CEC where needed, then verify the commands you intend to use. Configure ARC separately if you need audio from the display to return to the receiver.
  7. For wired automation, confirm the integration details. Check the interface, command set, cabling, and controller compatibility before installation.
  8. Test from the place you will use the system. Verify every required command for every component and troubleshoot the specific connection or setting that fails rather than assuming all devices share the same control path.

Keep control separate from closet suitability

A working remote-control path does not establish that a closet is appropriate for storing powered AV equipment. The control information here does not determine ventilation, electrical, or installation requirements for a particular space; check the equipment manuals and applicable installation guidance for those conditions.
