To configure a racing wheel for a game launched through Steam, connect and power the wheel, confirm that your PC and the wheel’s manufacturer software detect it, then bind the wheel and pedals in the game’s control settings. Steam does not provide one universal wheel-binding screen for every game. Exact steps depend on your wheel, operating system, and the game.

Set up the wheel before changing Steam settings

  1. Connect and power the wheel. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for USB and power connections, platform mode, and initial calibration. Some wheel bases briefly calibrate when powered on. For its Pro Racing Wheel, Logitech directs PC users to install Logitech G HUB and notes that some games require wheel configuration in the game before the wheel will function. Logitech Pro Racing Wheel setup guide.
  2. Check whether the PC sees the wheel and pedals. Use the manufacturer’s utility and, where available, your operating system’s controller input panel. Logitech’s G923/G29/G920 troubleshooting guidance recommends checking power and verifying inputs in G HUB and the Windows controller module. Logitech wheel connection troubleshooting.
  3. Open the game’s control options. Launch the game through Steam, find its controls or input settings, and bind steering, throttle, brake, clutch, and buttons that the game supports. Menu names and available controls vary by title.

Steam is the launch and distribution platform; the game usually provides the place to assign wheel axes and buttons. Steam notes that controller support varies by game, and support for a particular racing wheel is more specific still. Steam Big Picture controller support.

Adjust wheel behavior in its manufacturer software

Manufacturer software may expose wheel settings that are separate from the game’s bindings. For Logitech G29 and G920 wheels, Logitech documents steering and pedal sensitivity controls as well as a wheel operating range. Its instructions give 50% as the default sensitivity and a 40–900-degree range in 10-degree increments, with 900 degrees as the default. These figures apply to the documented G29/G920 software controls, not to all wheels. Logitech G29/G920 sensitivity and operating range.

If steering feels too slow or too sharp, check the game’s steering options and the wheel’s own range or sensitivity settings. Change one setting at a time and test in-game; the labels and available adjustments depend on the model and title. Do not assume a setting from one manufacturer’s software exists for another wheel.

Use Steam Input only when it fits the game

Steam Input settings are configured per game, and whether they help depends on the game’s supported input styles. Steam’s support guidance describes Steam Input and controller configurations; it is not a universal recipe for binding native racing-wheel axes. A configuration can fail if the game does not support the selected input style. Steamworks guidance for players using Steam Input and Steam Controller input-style troubleshooting.

If a Steam Input mapping makes the controls behave incorrectly, review that game’s Steam Input configuration and its supported inputs. For a wheel that the game supports natively, start with the game’s own wheel and axis controls rather than assuming a Steam Input mapping is required.

Local Steam play and Steam Link are different cases

A wheel that works when the game runs on the PC may not work when the game is streamed through Steam Link. Steam Support says racing wheels, fight sticks, and flight sticks are not natively supported on Steam Link, and identifies VirtualHere as a way to enable them. This limitation concerns Steam Link, not locally running Steam games. Steam Link input-device support.

Troubleshoot in the order the signal travels

  • The wheel does not power on or calibrate: Check its power and connection instructions, USB connection, and platform mode before changing game or Steam settings. Consult the manufacturer’s setup and troubleshooting guidance.
  • The PC utility or input panel shows no wheel or pedal input: Focus on the hardware connection, power, driver, mode, and manufacturer software. Logitech recommends checking G HUB and the Windows controller module for its supported wheel models. Its troubleshooting page also notes that an older Steam wheel-detection step shown in a video is no longer applicable. Logitech wheel connection troubleshooting.
  • The PC detects inputs, but the game does not: Check that the specific game supports the wheel, open its control options, and bind each available axis and button. Some games require in-game configuration before the wheel functions. Logitech Pro Racing Wheel setup guide.
  • The wheel works locally but not over Steam Link: Treat this as a Steam Link support issue and consult Steam’s guidance on the VirtualHere workaround. Steam Link input-device support.
  • Steam Input causes unexpected controls: Revisit the per-game configuration and confirm that the title supports the selected input style. Native wheel-axis setup may belong in the game rather than a Steam Input mapping. Steamworks guidance for players using Steam Input.

What determines the exact setup

There is no single setup path that applies to every wheel and Steam game. Before following model-specific instructions, identify the exact game and wheel model, confirm that the wheel supports your operating system and is in its PC mode, and check which manufacturer utility and inputs are available. A wheel, pedals, clutch, shifter, and buttons may each need separate bindings, if the game exposes them.
