If your DISH remote will not change the TV volume, start with fresh, correctly installed batteries and the right device mode. Then program the remote for your TV and check which device the remote is set to control. Button sequences and receiver menus vary by model, so use the instructions for your exact DISH remote and receiver.
1. Check the batteries
Replace weak or dead batteries with fresh AAA batteries, and confirm they are inserted with the polarity shown in the battery compartment. DISH’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends new AAA-size batteries when batteries are missing or dead.

2. Select the right mode and aim at the device
For direct TV control, press the remote’s TV mode button; use SAT mode to control the DISH receiver. Point the remote at the device you are trying to control and make sure nothing is blocking the signal. DISH says infrared signals travel less than 40 feet and do not pass through walls or other solid objects in its remote troubleshooting guide.

If MUTE and VOLUME do nothing, the remote may not be programmed for your television. DISH’s Remote User Guide gives this instruction for that symptom: “Program the remote to control your TV.” Follow the programming steps for your exact remote model; do not assume that a button sequence for another DISH remote will work.
#1 Best Overall
- This Remote is compatible with the Hopper family of Recievers, including the Joey and the Wally. Internet connectivity required for full search functionality.

- Backlit Keys: Your keypad illuminates automatically whenever you pick up your remote in a dark setting.
- Personalization: Program hot keys to launch an App, record shows, turn on closed captioning, and more.
- Remote Locator: Simply push a button on your DVR and your remote will beep and blink to help you find it.
4. Check which device receives volume commands
If your setup uses an audio receiver or amplifier for sound, the remote may be assigned to control that device rather than the TV. DISH’s model-specific guidance describes changing volume control back to the TV and checking TV volume while the remote is in SAT mode. Use the instructions for your remote model to change the assignment; the procedure is not universal.
Use the device that actually produces the sound as your guide. If the TV speakers produce the sound, test TV volume control. If an audio receiver or amplifier produces it, check whether the remote is programmed to control that equipment.

5. Check the TV and receiver settings
- Use the TV’s own controls to confirm it is not muted and its volume is turned up.
- Some DISH receiver manuals include a receiver menu choice for whether volume is controlled by the TV remote or the DISH remote. Check your receiver’s manual for the menu and available options; they differ by model. See the relevant receiver guidance.
6. If volume still does not work
Note the model of your DISH receiver and remote, then consult current DISH support or the manual for that equipment. The guides cited here include older material, and they do not establish which replacement remote is compatible with an unspecified receiver. Verify compatibility by model before buying a replacement.
