An MCP memory server lets a compatible AI application use information that persists beyond a single interaction. To choose one, compare where it stores data, how it represents and retrieves memories, which clients it supports, how persistence and recovery work, and the effort or cost of operating it.
What an MCP memory server does
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI client connect to servers that provide capabilities or information. A memory server makes persistent memory available through that connection, so a client can retain and use information beyond one conversation. Persistence does not mean every client automatically remembers everything: the client must support and be configured to use the server.
The official MCP servers repository describes its Memory server as “A basic implementation of persistent memory using a local knowledge graph.” In that implementation, entities are named nodes with a type and observations; directed relations connect entities. This is one documented design, not a requirement for all MCP memory servers. See the official Memory server documentation.
What the official local reference server stores and how it runs
The reference implementation is documented for local use with NPX or Docker. Its default storage is a JSONL file, and the README documents MEMORY_FILE_PATH for configuring the file path. These details apply to that server; a different implementation may use a different storage system, memory structure, or retrieval method.
#1 Best Overall
Local installation gives you a process and storage location to manage, but the word “local” alone does not establish how every connected client handles data or guarantee security. Review the current project documentation and your client’s data flow before relying on it for sensitive information. Setup examples and selected client instructions are in the Memory server README.
Local, self-hosted, or hosted: the deployment choice
The official MCP Registry also lists hosted MCP memory. One provider, Mnemoverse, describes memory shared across supported AI tools and says Enterprise self-hosting is available by agreement. Those are provider descriptions, not independent assessments of security, performance, or availability. Check current details directly before adopting a service.

| Approach | What the cited documentation establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Local reference server | The official implementation documents local NPX or Docker setup and a configurable JSONL data file. Official README | Exact storage path, backups, restore steps, client data flow, and compatibility with your MCP application. |
| Hosted memory service | The Registry lists Mnemoverse; its repository describes memory shared across supported AI tools. Official MCP Registry Provider repository | Current supported clients, data handling, retention, export and deletion, access controls, pricing, service terms, and availability. |
| Self-hosted hosted-service option | The provider says Enterprise self-hosting is available by agreement. Provider repository | Whether the option fits your deployment, what it includes, and the applicable terms; the cited description does not specify these details. |
If keeping data within an environment you control is the priority, start by evaluating a local or self-hosted deployment and verify its actual data flow. If shared memory across multiple AI clients matters more, evaluate hosted offerings and confirm their current data practices and terms. Neither deployment model is universally better.

How to evaluate an MCP memory server
1. Establish where data goes and who controls it
Map the path from the AI client to the memory server and its storage. Find out who operates the storage, what leaves your environment, and whether self-hosting is available on the plan you would use. Do not treat “local” or “hosted” as a security guarantee: consult the server’s and client’s current documentation for data flow and access controls.

2. Check how memories are represented and retrieved
Decide what your workflow needs to preserve and how you will inspect or correct recalled information. The official reference server documents entities, relations, and observations in a knowledge graph. Other implementations may use different structures and retrieval approaches, so confirm those details rather than assuming they behave like the reference server.
3. Confirm client compatibility and setup
Check current instructions for both the memory server and the MCP application you intend to use. Confirm the supported configuration method, transport, authentication requirements, and client support. Examples for selected clients appear in the official README, but instructions and compatibility can change.

The second is to provide batteries for power supply; Can and discharge at the same time. When charging, the indicator show red, and when fully charged, the indicator turn green
- APPLICABLE SCENARIO: This memory diagnostic analyzer is used to test various faults caused by hardware open circuits and short circuits in memory, addressing issues such as poor graphics memory performance
- FAST CHARGING: The memory tester use LED lights to test all data cables in the memory. When hardware faults occur in these data cable circuits, the brightness of the LED indicator light will change, whether they are particularly bright or not. Insert the memory module that need to be tested into the slot of the memory tester. If all indicator lights are on and the brightness is consistent, indicate that there is no open circuit or short circuit fault in the data line circuit of the
- USING TIPS: If the indicator light flashes during testing, indicate poor with the gold finger. If the indicator light does not light up, indicate an open circuit fault in the hardware. Check the wear of the gold finger, whether the is damaged, and whether the PCB circuit is open, identify the faulty pin based on the numerical indication of the indicator light, and then use a multimeter to identify the specific cause of the fault. After passing the hardware test of

4. Plan persistence, backup, and recovery
Identify where data is stored, how to back it up and restore it, and what happens after the process or host restarts. For the official reference implementation, the README identifies a JSONL file and a configurable path. Do not assume a hosted service or another server uses the same persistence model; check its documentation for export, recovery, and deletion procedures.

A local server requires installation and ongoing maintenance. For a hosted service, check current pricing, retention, export and deletion options, availability, and service terms directly. The available documentation does not establish a like-for-like price or reliability comparison between local and hosted options.

Does an MCP memory server require special hardware?
No particular physical product is established as necessary. The documented reference setup is software installed with NPX or Docker and a data file; the hosted route is a service. Choose a computer or storage arrangement based on your own deployment needs, not because MCP memory inherently requires a dedicated server or accessory.
