“Enter a PIN in my wireless router” usually means using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). The PIN might need to be entered on the device you’re connecting, or it might be a PIN displayed by that device that you enter in the router’s WPS settings. Check what the prompt asks for before entering anything.
First identify which WPS PIN the prompt requests
| WPS PIN flow | Where the PIN comes from | Where you enter it |
|---|---|---|
| Router PIN | The router’s label or WPS settings | The connected device’s WPS setup screen |
| Client PIN | The device you want to connect displays it | The router’s WPS page or wizard |
These are two different connection methods. Match the PIN to the wording on the screen; don’t assume the same value belongs in both interfaces. TP-Link, Linksys, and TP-Link Service Provider describe WPS PIN connection flows for their products.
Enter the router’s PIN on the device you want to connect
-
On the device you want to join the Wi-Fi network, open its wireless or WPS setup screen and choose the option that asks for the router’s WPS PIN.

Type the router PIN into the device’s prompt and follow the device’s instructions to complete the connection.
Don’t confuse the router PIN with the Wi-Fi network password. If the device offers a standard network-password option, you can use that instead of WPS.

Find WPS settings for your router model
Router menus vary by manufacturer, model, and firmware. Use the instructions for your exact router rather than treating another brand’s path as universal. For example, TP-Link documents Advanced > Wireless > WPS on supported models, while NETGEAR’s Nighthawk instructions use ADVANCED > WPS Wizard. Linksys documents its own web-interface flow. Follow the current manual for your router if these labels do not match what you see.
Troubleshoot a missing or unsuccessful PIN setup
-
There is no WPS or PIN option: The router or client may not support WPS, or the feature may not be available in its current settings. Check both devices’ manuals.

The router rejects the PIN or the connection fails: Confirm you chose the correct direction of the PIN flow, entered the current PIN, and completed any time-limited steps on the client.
-
WPS is disabled: Check the router’s WPS settings. If you enable WPS to connect a device, consider turning it off again afterward if you do not need it.
-
The router uses WEP encryption: TP-Link says WPS will not work when its router’s wireless encryption is WEP. Check the security settings and model documentation for compatible options. TP-Link’s WPS guidance covers this limitation.

Consider whether to use WPS at all
WPS is optional; devices can usually connect by selecting the Wi-Fi network and entering its password. CISA recommends turning WPS off as part of strengthening router configuration. If you do not need WPS, use the network password and disable WPS if your router provides that control. CISA’s advisory includes this recommendation. Microsoft also notes that some routers support WPS and recommends WPA3 when both the router and Windows PC support it. Microsoft’s Windows guidance explains its wireless setup options.
