In Bluehost’s documented MCP workflow, you choose how to authenticate with SSH before provisioning a Self-Managed VPS, then receive chat-guided deployment steps for installing dependencies, putting application files on the server, configuring web-server routing, and setting up a background service. The assistant guides the process; the documentation does not establish that MCP automatically performs every deployment action. This is a specific Bluehost workflow, not a universal VPS recipe.
What SSH key should you choose before provisioning?
Bluehost’s article, updated September 17, 2026, describes two choices in its Self-Managed VPS flow: provide an existing public SSH key or ask the AI assistant to generate a new key pair. The public key is the part supplied for server access; if a new pair is generated, the corresponding private key is delivered after provisioning along with connection instructions. Bluehost’s workflow presents reusing an existing key as an option for people managing multiple servers.

- Use an existing key: Provide its public key if you already manage SSH access this way and want to reuse that identity.
- Generate a new pair: Choose this if you need a new SSH identity for the VPS. After provisioning, save the private key securely and follow the connection instructions. Bluehost says that losing it requires creating a replacement pair and reconfiguring access.
Keep the distinction between the two key files clear: the public key is provided for access setup; the private key is the credential you need to protect and retain. Do not send or publish the private key.
What happens during VPS provisioning?
Once you confirm the SSH approach, the described assistant flow proceeds with the purchase and provisions the VPS with matching access credentials. In this workflow, that is intended to avoid a separate SSH configuration step after provisioning. That claim applies to the Bluehost process described in its article; it should not be assumed for other providers or MCP servers.
#1 Best Overall
- Wide Compatibility & Versatile Use: ZOERAX M6 rack mount screw kit is ideal for installing server racks, network cabinets, rack shelves, patch panels, A/V equipment, and more. Designed for standard square-hole racks and cabinets, these M6 cage nuts and screws ensure a secure fit for most 19-inch rack systems used in data centers, offices, and home labs
- Heavy-Duty Carbon Steel Construction: Made from premium carbon steel, these M6 cage nuts and screws deliver high strength and long-lasting durability. The material provides excellent resistance to rust, corrosion, and oxidation, performing reliably in demanding environments such as high humidity, temperature fluctuations, and long-term rack installations
- Precision Metric Standard M6: Manufactured to strict metric standards, each M6 screw and cage nut features precise dimensions with minimal tolerance. Clean, sharp threads without burrs allow smooth installation without stripping or slipping. The deep Phillips head design ensures better torque control and faster, more efficient mounting
- Safe, Reliable & Eco-Conscious Materials: ZOERAX uses non-toxic, environmentally friendly carbon steel materials to ensure safe handling and use. Heat-treated for optimal hardness, ductility, and impact resistance, these rack screws and cage nuts offer dependable performance while meeting safety and quality expectations for professional installations
- Complete Mounting Kit with Washers: This essential M6 rack hardware kit includes screws, cage nuts, and heavy-duty washers. The included washers help distribute pressure evenly and reduce scratches or marks on rack rails and equipment, providing a cleaner, more secure installation right out of the box
How does the guided app deployment work?
After provisioning, the workflow presents deployment instructions as terminal-ready sections, delivered one at a time. The documented sequence covers four parts of an initial deployment:
- Install dependencies. Set up the web server, programming language, frameworks, and other components the app needs.
- Create and transfer the application. Create application files, generate application code as needed, and transfer the files to the VPS.
- Configure web-server routing. Set up the server to route browser requests to the application.
- Set up a background service. Configure a service intended to keep the application running, including after a server restart.
The source describes commands and follow-up guidance in chat. It does not provide a complete command sequence or show that the MCP server directly executes every installation, file-transfer, configuration, or service-management action. Treat this as a guided deployment walkthrough: review and run the supplied commands as directed, and describe errors in chat to get follow-up help.

SSH setup is only one part of server security
The Ubuntu Server Guide describes installing OpenSSH Server for remote access and importing SSH identities during setup; adding a user’s keys at installation can enable passwordless first login. That is setup context, not a complete hardening policy. The reviewed guide passage does not settle whether password authentication should be enabled or disabled for your server, so do not treat the key-selection flow alone as a full security configuration. Ubuntu Server Guide: OpenSSH Server
Check the MCP server’s own network and authentication guidance
MCP is not a single security configuration. Supabase’s guidance for its self-hosted MCP server says it does not offer OAuth 2.1 authentication and is not intended for Internet exposure. It directs administrators to restrict external connections and use a VPN or SSH tunnel. The warning is specific to that product, not a blanket rule for every MCP server. Supabase: Enabling MCP Server Access
Confirm firewall and recovery behavior for your provider
VPS-provider tools can expose different operations and carry provider-specific caveats. Firewall guidance for one VPS API describes incoming traffic being dropped by default until accept rules are added for needed ports; it also says firewall synchronization may need manual attention after rule changes. Its snapshot documentation says creating a new snapshot overwrites the existing one. These are details of that API documentation, not Bluehost instructions or general VPS guarantees.
Does this workflow require Docker?
No Docker requirement is established for Bluehost’s described deployment sequence. A separate Hezo VPS guide illustrates one product-specific setup using Docker, automatic HTTPS, systemd, and a firewall, but that example does not show that all VPS applications need Docker or that this is the right architecture for every app. Hezo: Self-hosting on a VPS
