Before shipping a browser table exporter, verify that CSV fields survive commas, quotes, line breaks, empty cells, and irregular rows; that the download works in supported browsers; that filenames behave as expected; and that spreadsheet software does not treat untrusted text as a formula. These checks catch data corruption and user surprises that a successful download alone will not reveal.
1. Do commas, quotes, and line breaks stay inside their cells?
Build a test table with values such as Smith, Lee, He said "hello", and a cell containing a line break. After export, inspect the CSV as text and open it in the spreadsheet applications your product supports. Each value should remain one field, and the line break inside a cell should not become an unintended record.
RFC 4180 describes a common CSV format in which fields containing commas, double quotes, or line breaks are quoted, and embedded double quotes are doubled. It also describes CRLF as the record separator. The RFC is informational guidance, not a guarantee that every CSV consumer parses files identically. Read RFC 4180.

Test empty cells at the start, middle, and end of a row. Include a header row, then test rows with missing or extra cells if your application can produce them. Compare the intended table with the serialized fields: check both the number and order of fields in every record, and confirm that the header policy is consistent.

RFC 4180 describes an optional header line and says records should contain the same number of fields. Decide how your exporter handles irregular rows rather than allowing cells to shift silently into the wrong columns. RFC 4180’s CSV format guidance is a useful reference.
3. Does the download work in the browsers you support?
Exercise the complete export action in each browser and configuration in your product’s support matrix. A successful CSV string or Blob is not enough: verify that the user can initiate the download and receives the intended content. Browser settings and download handling can affect the outcome, so do not infer compatibility from one browser.

If you use an anchor’s download attribute, MDN documents that it applies to same-origin, blob:, and data: URLs; it does not make arbitrary cross-origin URLs downloadable. The attribute suggests a download rather than guaranteeing identical behavior everywhere. MDN’s anchor element reference explains the attribute.
For locally generated data, a Blob URL can provide the download target. If you create one, verify that it remains available through the download interaction and revoke it afterward to release the object URL. Revoking it too early can disrupt access. MDN’s blob URL guidance covers their use and lifecycle.

4. Is the filename acceptable, without assuming it is exact?
Request filenames containing spaces and characters restricted by the filesystems you support. Check the suggested name and extension in the actual download flow. Browsers and filesystems may adjust the requested filename, so treat the result as a suggestion, not a promise of an exact saved name.
If you also offer a server-backed export, test how the response’s Content-Disposition header interacts with the filename. MDN notes that this header can affect the name used for a download. See MDN’s documentation for the download attribute.
5. Can untrusted text become a spreadsheet formula?
CSV syntax correctness and spreadsheet safety are different checks. Include untrusted values that begin with formula-like characters, as well as values combining delimiters and quotes that could make dangerous content begin a new cell. Test the exported file in the spreadsheet applications your product supports, and include save-and-reopen if that is part of the expected workflow.
OWASP describes this risk as CSV injection. It cautions that quoting or escaping approaches may not remain safe after Excel saves and reopens a file, and that behavior differs across spreadsheet software. A tab-prefix approach has data-integrity trade-offs; no single transformation should be presented as a guarantee across all consumers. Decide whether the export is for spreadsheet viewing or programmatic re-import, then assess formula handling alongside the effect of any mitigation on the underlying cell data.
