A tablet call can echo when its speaker sound is picked up again by a microphone; delay usually needs a separate check of the Wi-Fi connection, routing, or device load. Start by isolating the audio path, then test the connection and the tablet’s microphone before buying an accessory.
Is it echo, delay, or both?
Echo is repeated sound. It often happens when audio from a tablet or another nearby device’s speaker reaches an active microphone, or when a participant joins the same call through more than one audio connection. Delay is sound or video arriving late; investigate network stability, latency, VPN routing, and device or app load separately.
First note who hears the echo: you, other participants, or both. That clue can help narrow the investigation, but it does not identify the source by itself. Also clarify what “delay” means in your call: delayed speech, frozen video, or both can have different causes.
How to isolate and reduce call echo
- Try headphones. A headset with a microphone keeps speaker audio from feeding back into the tablet microphone. Google recommends headphones to help avoid echo and a headset with a microphone when audio quality is poor. Google Meet’s audio and video troubleshooting guidance covers these steps.
- Lower the tablet’s speaker volume and mute when you are not speaking. These steps can reduce sound reaching an open microphone.
- Disconnect duplicate audio. In a room with multiple devices on the same call, disconnect audio on the extra devices rather than only muting their microphones: a muted microphone may leave that device’s speaker active. Zoom lists simultaneous computer and telephone audio, nearby speakers, multiple active computers, loud speakers, failed echo cancellation, and a faulty microphone among possible echo causes. Zoom’s echo guidance also describes how a host can mute attendees one at a time to help isolate a source.
- Check the call app’s selected input and output. Confirm it is using the microphone and speaker or headset you intend. Bluetooth may be convenient, but behavior varies: Google cautions that some Bluetooth headsets work poorly with Meet, and Zoom notes that other participants may hear lower microphone quality with Bluetooth headphones. See Zoom’s Bluetooth headphone guidance.
How to investigate Wi-Fi call delay
Check stability, not just one speed-test result
Run an internet speed test and observe bandwidth and latency over time. A single result cannot establish that a connection will remain stable throughout a call. Google recommends a stable connection and suggests trying 5 GHz Wi-Fi instead of the more heavily used 2.4 GHz band when 5 GHz is available. The best option depends on your network and location.

Change the connection conditions
- Move the tablet closer to the router or access point.
- Try another Wi-Fi network or hotspot to see whether the problem changes.
- Test wired access if the tablet and network setup support it.
Zoom includes these kinds of connection checks in its wireless connection troubleshooting guidance. A new router is not the first step: first determine whether changing network conditions affects the call.
Check VPN, apps, and video load
If you use a VPN, temporarily test the call without it only if you are allowed to do so. Google explains that a VPN sends traffic through an additional network location and may delay Meet video transmission. On a managed or work network, ask an administrator before changing VPN or network settings.

Close nonessential apps and browser tabs, and reduce video quality if the tablet or connection seems strained. Google notes that too many open tabs and applications can contribute to poor video quality. Its guidance also identifies some network inspection or quality-of-service configurations as possible contributors to Meet problems; those settings are best reviewed with the network administrator.

Google Workspace administrator guidance says video quality is highest when client-to-Google round-trip latency is below 100 ms. That is a scoped Meet network measure—not a universal pass/fail threshold for every tablet, calling service, Wi-Fi network, or route. See Google Workspace’s network, audio, and video troubleshooting guidance.

How to check the tablet microphone
Make sure the calling app has permission to use the microphone and that the app has selected the intended input device. Check that a case or screen film is not covering microphone openings, and clear debris carefully.
For an iPad, Apple recommends recording video with the front and back cameras, then replaying it to check the microphones. If recordings still sound unclear, Apple says service may be needed. Follow Apple’s iPad microphone troubleshooting steps. A recording test can help distinguish a tablet microphone issue from a problem that appears only inside a particular call app.

When a headset or adapter may help
A headset with a microphone is the clearest physical accessory to try for echo or poor audio, but it will not fix network lag. Choose based on the tablet’s exact model and connector, whether the headset has a microphone, and whether the calling app selects that headset for both input and output.
For USB-C iPads, Apple documents wired USB-C headphones and a separately sold USB-C-to-3.5 mm headphone adapter. It also lists USB-to-Ethernet adapters among possible USB-C connections. Compatibility depends on the iPad model, port, accessory, and network setup; consult Apple’s USB-C iPad connection guidance before choosing an adapter. Ethernet is a test option only where the device and network support it, not a universal remedy.
Quick Recap
A practical order for troubleshooting
- For echo, try headphones, lower speaker volume, and disconnect audio from extra devices in the room.
- Check the app’s microphone and speaker selections, then test the tablet microphone and permissions.
- For delay, observe connection stability, move closer to the access point, and try another network or wired access if supported.
- If relevant, test without a VPN only with permission; close unnecessary apps and tabs, and reduce video quality if needed.
- Consider an accessory only after identifying the likely issue and confirming connector and app compatibility.
