Often, yes: you can download a shared cloud file without an account if the owner allows access to anyone with the link and has not disabled downloads. If a link asks you to sign in, verify your email, or request access, the sender’s sharing settings or organization policy control what happens. There is no legitimate recipient-side workaround for a restricted link.
What determines whether you can download without an account?
Two permissions matter: whether you may open the link, and whether you may download the file. An “Anyone with the link” setting can make a file accessible without a service account, but some services let the owner disable downloads separately. Links can also expire, be revoked, or be limited by an employer or school administrator.
An anyone-link is not private to the original recipient. Anyone who obtains or is sent the link may be able to open it, depending on the owner’s settings. Check what you are sharing before forwarding it.

How account-free access works on each service
Google Drive
For a typical public link, the owner sets General access to “Anyone with the link” and chooses an appropriate role. Google Drive Help says, “Anyone who has the link can use your file, without signing in to their Google Account.” The owner can separately control whether viewers and commenters may download, print, or copy, so link access does not automatically mean downloading is allowed. Some Google Workspace work or school accounts offer visitor sharing, which is different from anonymous public access. If the organization enables it, a non-Google recipient verifies an email address with a PIN. The visitor can collaborate for seven days before verifying again. Visitors can download individual files in My Drive or shared drives, but this visitor flow does not support downloading folders. Google Drive Help: Share documents with visitors.
Dropbox
Dropbox says people without an account can view and download files from a shared link. Open the link and select the download icon. That is not the same as joining a shared folder: membership and syncing changes require a Dropbox account. The owner can remove a shared link to stop access. OneDrive and SharePoint
Microsoft’s “Anyone” links do not require a Microsoft account, passcode, or sign-in, but anyone who gets the link can forward it. For more limited access, the sender can specify recipients. An external recipient without a Microsoft account may be asked to verify with a one-time passcode sent by email; the link is then limited to the specified people. Owners can also block downloads, so being able to view does not guarantee that you can save a copy. An organization administrator may restrict external sharing. Apple offers “Anyone with the Link” access and a “View and Download Only” permission. The owner can instead restrict access to “People you choose.” If the owner changes an anyone-link to selected people, the original link stops working for people who were not invited. Apple says invited people can pass the link to others, so access depends on the owner’s chosen sharing mode. The exact prompt may vary by recipient and device. What to do when you receive a shared link
- Open the link provided by the owner in a browser.
- If the file opens and a download control is available, select it. For a Dropbox shared link, use the download icon.
- If you are asked to sign in, request access, or enter a verification code, check that the prompt is from the expected service and that you trust the sender. Email or PIN verification can be a legitimate part of restricted guest access.
- If access fails, ask the sender to confirm that the link is active, covers the intended file, allows your level of access, and permits downloads. For a work or school link, the organization may also need to allow external sharing.
Why a shared link may still ask you to sign in
- The link is restricted: The owner may have limited it to named people or invited accounts.
- Verification is required: Some guest-sharing flows verify your email with a PIN or one-time passcode instead of requiring a full account.
- Downloads are blocked: You may be able to view the file but not save it.
- The link no longer works: It may have been revoked, expired, or changed to a different sharing mode.
- An administrator limits sharing: A workplace or school may prevent external access even when the sender wants to share the file.
- You are opening a shared folder rather than a shared file: In Dropbox, downloading a file through a link does not require an account, but joining and syncing a shared folder does.
Ask the owner to adjust the permission or invite you through the intended guest-access method. Do not try to bypass a sign-in prompt or other access control; only the owner or administrator can grant the required access.
