The AT command set is a text-based interface for controlling modems and mobile equipment. A host sends a command beginning with AT; the device processes it and returns a response or status. The phrase can refer to standardized basic modem commands, cellular-specific extensions, or a device’s own supported subset—so it does not mean that every command works on every modem.
What does “AT command set” mean?
“AT” introduces commands sent from terminal equipment—such as a computer or application—to a modem or mobile device. The device acts on the request and sends a response back through the connection. This is a command interface, not a programming language or a guarantee of identical behavior across devices.
In cellular systems, the host-side terminal communicates with Mobile Equipment through an interface that may involve a Terminal Adapter. ETSI describes 3GPP TS 27.007 as a profile for controlling Mobile Equipment functions and GSM network services from Terminal Equipment through a Terminal Adapter. The 3GPP TS 27.007 specification page identifies the document as “AT command set for User Equipment (UE).”

Which standards define AT commands?
The phrase covers related command families, not one universal list. ITU-T Recommendation V.250 specifies standardized basic modem commands. For cellular User Equipment, 3GPP TS 27.007 defines extended commands and follows the extended-command syntax rules. As ETSI TS 127 007 V17.6.0 puts it, “Standardized basic commands are found only in ITU-T Recommendation V.250.”

SMS commands are addressed separately in 3GPP TS 27.005; their existence should not be taken to mean TS 27.007 contains every cellular command family. A command may also be specific to a manufacturer or device. The applicable standard and the equipment’s documentation determine what is supported.
How are extended AT commands written?
For parameter-type extended commands, the ending often indicates what the command does. The following forms are illustrative; consult the relevant standard or device reference for exact command names, parameters, and behavior.

- Set: supplies values to configure a feature.
- Read: ends in
?and requests the current value of a parameter-type command. - Test: ends in
=?and asks whether a command is supported and what parameter types it accepts. - Action: performs an operation rather than storing parameter values, so it has no read form.
Common final responses include OK and ERROR, but commands can return additional information or other error forms. Interpret the full response according to the applicable command reference.

A standard describes command syntax and behavior for its scope; it does not prove that every modem firmware implements every command or parameter. Devices can support different subsets, and vendor-specific extensions may add commands beyond those defined by a standard. Check the modem’s own AT command reference, and distinguish documented standard commands from vendor extensions.

Response formats can also evolve. ETSI TS 127 007 V17.6.0 (3GPP TS 27.007 version 17.6.0, Release 17; August 2022) warns that future versions may add response parameters. Software that parses responses should handle all returned parameters and ignore additional ones it does not recognize instead of assuming the response will always have a fixed length.
Can AT commands expose sensitive information?
Yes. The Release 17 specification flags commands that may carry sensitive values, including passwords, subscriber identities, location, equipment identifiers, and security-related data. These examples are not an exhaustive list. Treat command access and output as potentially sensitive: restrict who or what can access the interface, and avoid retaining sensitive values in logs unless necessary and appropriately protected.

When is an AT command set useful?
AT commands are useful when software or a person needs to control or query a modem or mobile device through its supported command interface. They can help connect a host application to device functions, but the precise capabilities depend on the command family, device, and firmware. To experiment, a cellular modem can serve as a hands-on example; it is not required to understand the concept. Verify command support in the device documentation before relying on a particular command.
