It depends on what “rarest” means. For a block that generates naturally, deepslate emerald ore is a strong candidate: emerald ore is limited to mountainous biomes, and Minecraft says it is very rare below height 0. For a scarce collectible, the Dragon Egg is a separate answer. There is no official, all-block ranking that proves one block is the rarest in every edition and acquisition category.
Why there is no single rarest block
Rarity can mean a block is difficult to find in a generated world, difficult to collect in Survival, or limited in how many a player can acquire. Those categories do not produce the same answer. Edition and version also matter, and the official sources available do not publish comparable odds for every block.
Rarest naturally generated block: deepslate emerald ore
Emerald ore generates only in mountainous biomes. Minecraft’s Java 1.18 release notes specifically say that emerald ore below height 0 is “very rare.” When emerald ore generates in deepslate, it appears as the deepslate variant, making deepslate emerald ore a defensible candidate for an exceptionally rare naturally generated ore. The release notes do not assign it a numerical spawn probability or establish it as the rarest block overall.

Rarest collectible: the Dragon Egg
If the question is about a limited collectible rather than a naturally generated block, the Dragon Egg is a strong candidate. In an official article published October 10, 2025, Minecraft calls it “arguably the rarest item in the game.” The article says Java Edition players can get one, while Bedrock Edition players can get two by defeating the Ender Dragon twice. These are acquisition limits described by Minecraft, not comparative spawn odds for blocks.

Why reinforced deepslate is a different case
Reinforced deepslate is associated with ancient cities, but Minecraft’s Java 1.19 release notes say it cannot be obtained in Survival. That makes it relevant when comparing unusual blocks in the game, but not a like-for-like answer to which block a Survival player can rarely find and collect.

- Rare naturally generated ore: deepslate emerald ore is a reasonable candidate, because emerald ore is biome-restricted and very rare below height 0.
- Limited collectible: the Dragon Egg, with different acquisition counts in Java and Bedrock Edition.
- Unobtainable in Survival: reinforced deepslate is a separate category, not a Survival collection target.
