To turn up a projector’s volume, unmute and raise the volume on both the projector and the device playing the video. If sound is still too quiet, check which audio output is selected; compatible, self-powered external speakers may be a better option than the projector’s built-in speaker.
How to turn up the volume
- Check mute. Make sure the projector, source device (such as a computer or streaming device), and any connected speaker are not muted.
- Raise the source-device volume. Use its volume controls as well as the projector’s. With HDMI or screen mirroring, audio may be routed from a device or output you did not expect.
- Check the projector’s audio output. Select the built-in speaker if you want sound from the projector, or the connected audio system if you are using external speakers. Menu names and choices depend on the model; Epson examples put relevant controls under Signal I/O or HDMI Link.
If those checks do not restore sound, consult the manual for your projector and source device. Philips Projection’s troubleshooting guidance, for example, recommends checking mute and the source’s audio output, raising computer volume when applicable, and—in the specific case it describes—setting HDMI audio to “Multichannel (Raw data) & Stereo (PCM).” That setting is not a universal fix: follow the instructions for your equipment. What to do if the built-in speaker is too quiet
Connect compatible self-powered speakers or an audio system, then select that output in the projector’s audio settings. “Self-powered” means the speaker has its own power source rather than relying on the projector to drive it. Check the projector’s available output and the speaker’s input before buying a cable or adapter; ports and supported connections differ by model.

For example, Epson documents an Audio Out connection to self-powered speakers on the BrightLink EB-760Wi. Epson says connecting external speakers disables that model’s built-in speaker, and its remote can control volume. Its instructions also note that the appropriate cable or adapter and output selection depend on the equipment. HDMI ARC may be another route when both the projector and audio system support it and the model’s setup allows it. Epson documents HDMI and HDMI ARC audio connections for the LS500W in its configuration guidance; this does not mean every projector has ARC or supports the same routing. Epson LS500W support FAQ
If there is still no sound
- Confirm the source is actually sending audio, not just video, and check its selected audio output.
- Verify the projector is set to the output you intend to use: built-in speaker or connected audio system.
- Check that the cable matches the projector’s output and speaker’s input, and that any external speaker is powered on.
- Look up the exact model’s manual for its audio menu, port behavior, and remote-control support. Some projectors switch off their built-in speakers when external speakers are connected.
If the controls and connections still do not resolve the problem, provide the projector model and source device when seeking support. Without those details, there is no reliable universal menu path or cable recommendation.
