If pressing your desktop’s case power button does nothing, first check the outlet, power cable, and PSU switch. Then inspect the case’s front-panel connector using the manual for your exact motherboard. A multimeter can test whether the disconnected case switch circuit closes when pressed; a built-in motherboard power button or a careful test of the documented PWR_SW pins can show whether the board responds. These checks help isolate the button path, but they do not by themselves diagnose a failed PSU or motherboard.
First, tell “no power” from “no display” or “no boot”
Note what happens when you press the case button:
- No power: no lights or fan movement. Check the external power path and switch wiring first.
- Power, but no display: fans or lights come on, but there is no image. That is a display or POST problem, not evidence by itself that the case button is faulty.
- Power, but no boot: the computer starts but does not complete startup. Treat this as a boot problem rather than a failed power button.
AMD distinguishes no-power, no-display, and no-boot symptoms in its PC troubleshooting guidance. The distinction matters: a button can successfully start the system even if another problem prevents an image or a completed boot.
Check the outlet, cable, and PSU switch
Before opening the case, confirm the power cable is firmly connected to the PC and outlet, and that the PSU’s rear switch is set to on. If you are unsure the outlet works, test it with another electrical device. AMD also recommends checking the power source, PSU switch, and connection in its troubleshooting steps.
Find the correct front-panel pins for your motherboard
The case’s power-switch lead connects to a system-panel or front-panel header on the motherboard. The power-switch pins and labels vary by board, so use the manual for the motherboard installed in your PC—not a pinout for a similar-looking model. Intel’s desktop-board guidance notes that the switch pins may be labeled PWR_SW and can be difficult to see. MSI refers to its board-specific header as JFP1 in its PC-building guidance. Those labels are examples, not a universal pin assignment.
#1 Best Overall
- External Desktop PC Power Switch: It is recommended for home users, computer rooms, bare board machines, water-cooled chassis DIY, etc. If the case is placed in a hard-to-reach place, use this switch to lead to a place where it is convenient to operate.
- Easy to install by Sticker: Please check the installation instructions on product description. Just connect the POWER LED+, POWER LED-,POWER SW connectors with motherboard and stick the adhesive
- If the button on the chassis panel is damaged, this repair is a very good choice. The switch wiring can be inserted from the optical drive position on the front panel, the fan window on the back panel, the expansion slot on the back panel, etc.
- Comes with 1 to 2 Splitter: the small 1 to 2 splitter board makes the power button works with your original power supply works together
- Package included: 1x Computer Power Switch ON/OFF with 1.7M cable; 1x 1 to 2 splitters; 1x adhesive stickers; 1x installation manua.
In the manual, locate the system-panel/front-panel connector diagram and identify the two power-switch pins. ASUS’s PRIME B460-PLUS manual describes its system-panel header as the place for the system power button; that is a model-specific example, not a pinout for other boards. If you cannot positively identify the correct pair for your board, do not attempt a bypass.
Inspect the case power-switch lead
Shut the computer down and unplug its power cable before working inside. Find the case lead marked for the power switch and check that its plug is seated on the motherboard’s documented power-switch pins. Look for a loose plug or visible damage to the lead. A misplaced front-panel connector can stop the chassis buttons from working, as AMD notes in its troubleshooting guidance.

- With the PC shut down and unplugged, remove the case power-switch plug from the motherboard header.
- Set a multimeter to continuity mode and place one probe on each of the two switch leads.
- Press the case power button. Continuity should register while the button is pressed, according to the LCSC continuity-test guide.
If continuity does not register when you press the button, the switch or its lead may be faulty. This test cannot distinguish between those two parts. If continuity does register, the switch circuit closes, but that alone does not prove the motherboard or the rest of the PC is working.

Option 2: Check whether the motherboard responds
If your motherboard has a built-in power button, use it as a comparison after reconnecting power and following the board’s manual. Intel recommends this comparison where a board has its own button. If the board starts with that control but not with the case button, investigate the case switch and wiring.
If there is no built-in button, a brief bypass check is possible only when you have positively identified the exact PWR_SW pair in the manual. Shut down and unplug the PC, remove the case switch plug, then follow the board-specific instructions from Intel or MSI for briefly bridging the correct pins. Do not bridge neighboring pins, guess from a generic diagram, or try this if the pair is uncertain.

- Computer chassis switch cable with LED is mainly used to replace old or damaged ATX power reset switch or computer host switch. Suitable for DIY computer switch and restart button
- PC case LED power button easy to install, one end connect the motherboard POWER or RESET jack, the other end of the switch connect to the chassis panel.
- ATX supply on/off cable maximum 3A current ,The rated voltage and current of the LED of the switch: rated voltage 3-6V, rated current ≤ 20mA.Switch rated load : 12mm switch - AC / DC 220V 3A max, 16mm switch - AC / DC 0-220V 5A Max.
- DIY atx power switch with light button adopts high brightness solid color LED, built-in resistance step-down. When button is red, it is the restart key, and when it is blue, it is the start key.
- The pc power button is made of nickel plated aluminum alloy with long service life. The length of switch wire is about 60cm / 23.6in, for your computer case enough
If the PC responds to the built-in button or the correctly identified PWR_SW pins but not to the case button, the case switch or its wiring is implicated. The bypass checks whether the motherboard responds to the power-switch input; it does not test the mechanical case button itself.

Interpret a failed start carefully
If the PC still does not start from a documented motherboard button or the correctly identified switch pins, the case-button checks have not identified the cause. Recheck the PSU’s power connection and switch, the outlet and cable, and the motherboard and CPU power connections. AMD’s troubleshooting guidance covers power-source and connection checks. These results do not establish whether the PSU, motherboard, or another component is faulty.

If fans or lights do come on but there is no image, stop treating the case button as the main suspect and continue with display or POST troubleshooting. A working response to the power input shows only that the system reacted to that input at the time; it does not establish that every component is healthy.
Which test should you use?
| Test | What it checks | Tool or requirement | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Continuity test on disconnected case lead | Whether the case switch-and-lead circuit closes when pressed | Multimeter with continuity mode | Cannot separate a faulty switch from a faulty lead, or test the motherboard |
| Motherboard button or documented PWR_SW bypass | Whether the motherboard responds to the power-switch input | Board-specific manual; no meter needed | Does not test the case button itself; an incorrectly identified pin pair makes a bypass unsafe |
Use the continuity test to check the case-side circuit. Use the motherboard comparison to check whether the board responds. If you are unsure about the header pins, skip the bypass and consult the exact motherboard manual.
