Pair a call-capable Bluetooth speaker with your phone, then select it from the audio controls on the active call. A speaker that plays music over Bluetooth may not support calls, so check its manual if it does not appear as a call destination.
Before routing a call
- Check call support. Look in the speaker’s manual for phone calls, hands-free calling, speakerphone, or call audio. Bluetooth music playback alone does not confirm that a speaker can handle calls. Google notes that not all Bluetooth accessories support calls; Sony’s SRS-XE300 guide describes call handling through HFP/HSP.
- Pair and connect the speaker. On Android, open Settings or quick settings, choose Bluetooth, then Pair new device. To reconnect a previously paired speaker, open Bluetooth settings and select it from saved devices. Menu names can vary by phone and Android version. Google’s pairing instructions note that some steps depend on the device.
- Keep the connection available. Keep the phone near the speaker and make sure it is connected to this phone rather than another paired device that may be receiving calls.
Choose the speaker for the current call
On iPhone
During a call, tap Audio and choose the Bluetooth speaker from the available destinations. Apple documents this in its guide to call controls on iPhone.
In Google’s Phone app on Android
During a call, tap the call audio or speaker control and select the connected Bluetooth device. Google’s Phone app instructions describe switching among the earpiece, speakerphone, and connected Bluetooth headsets. Other dialer and calling apps may present different controls.

In Google Voice on Android
During a Google Voice call, tap Sound and choose the external device. These instructions apply to Google Voice; they do not establish how every third-party calling app handles Bluetooth output. See Google Voice’s audio-device instructions.

Set iPhone’s default call audio destination
To choose a default destination rather than selecting the speaker separately during each call, go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing and select the desired destination. Apple lists Bluetooth as an available call destination in its iPhone call-routing guide. You can still use the Audio control during a call when you want a different destination for that call.
If the Bluetooth speaker is missing or calls stay on the phone
- Music works, but calls do not: Check the accessory’s Bluetooth settings for a Phone audio or Call Audio option, and confirm the speaker supports calls. On Android, the accessory’s settings may be under Settings > Connected devices or Bluetooth. Google’s Bluetooth troubleshooting steps explain the Phone audio check. Menu availability varies by device.
- The speaker is not listed in the call controls: Confirm it is paired and connected, check whether another paired device is handling calls, then reconnect the speaker and reopen the call’s audio selector.
- The call switches back to the handset: Verify that call audio is enabled for the speaker, then choose it again from the active call screen. Sony’s SRS-XE300 guide directs users with an HFP/HSP connection to switch the call device from the smartphone; this is model-specific guidance, not a rule for every speaker.
What changes with stereo or party modes?
Some speakers behave differently when paired into a stereo or party group. For the Sony SRS-XE300 in Stereo Pair or Party Connect, Sony says call audio comes from the speaker whose Bluetooth indicator is lit blue. That instruction applies to the specified Sony model and modes, not to all grouped Bluetooth speakers. Consult the guide for your exact model.

Keep calls off a speaker while listening to music
Call routing can also be disabled when you do not want calls interrupting music. For Bose SoundLink Home, Bose says Android users can turn off Call Audio in the Bluetooth device settings; doing so disables speakerphone functions. For iPhone, Bose recommends changing Call Audio Routing to iPhone. These are Bose-specific instructions for the cited model family: Bose SoundLink Home support.
