To download one CSV from GitHub, open the file in its repository, select Raw, then use the download control in the raw view. If you need the file in a script, request it through GitHub’s Contents REST API; if you need several repository files, download a ZIP snapshot instead.
Download one CSV in your browser
- Open the repository on GitHub.
- Open the CSV file you want.
- Select Raw in the upper-right of the file view.
- In the raw file view, select the download control in the upper-right. GitHub’s documentation shows the control as an icon, so its appearance may vary with interface changes. GitHub Docs: Viewing and understanding files
This route is the simplest choice when you only need a single file and do not need to automate the download.
Choose the right way to get the file

Retrieve a CSV with the Contents API
The GitHub Contents endpoint can return raw file contents when you request the application/vnd.github.raw+json media type. Public resources can be requested without authentication; accessing a private repository requires suitable authorization. See GitHub’s Contents REST API reference for the current endpoint details and authentication requirements.
Check the file-size limit
- Files up to and including 1 MB support all endpoint features.
- Files over 1 MB and up to 100 MB support only the
raworobjectmedia types. - Files larger than 100 MB are not supported by this endpoint.
These are GitHub Contents API limits, not general limits for every way of accessing GitHub files. If you use the API’s download_url, treat it as a one-time URL: it expires, so request a fresh URL from the Contents API for another download. GitHub Contents API

When a ZIP or clone makes more sense
Use Code → Download ZIP when you want a local snapshot of multiple repository files. GitHub describes its archive as a snapshot of a branch, tag, or specific commit; it does not include the full Git history. GitHub Docs: Downloading source code archives
Clone the repository instead when you need its file and folder versions for ongoing Git-based work. Forking is different again: it creates a related repository under your GitHub account. For the distinctions, see GitHub Docs: Downloading files from GitHub.

Keep a download tied to a specific version
A branch or tag can point to a different commit over time, so an archive requested from either reference may contain different files later. For a repeatable snapshot, use an archive tied to a commit ID. GitHub says the extracted contents of an archive for a commit ID remain the same on later requests, provided the commit is still in the repository and the repository name has not changed.
