WebBrain is an open-source browser extension whose author describes it as a sidebar agent that can use local or cloud language models. It separates read-only page questions from browser actions and developer inspection, and it can connect to Claude Code through an MCP server. The feature and privacy details below are claims made by project builder Emre Sokullu, not independently verified test results.
What WebBrain does
Sokullu describes WebBrain as a free browser extension released under GPL-3.0. Its sidebar offers three modes organized around what the agent may do on a page:
| Mode | Purpose and permissions described by the author |
|---|---|
| Ask | Read-only page work: read content, answer questions, extract tables or lists, and read PDFs. Example prompts include summarizing a thread or collecting product names and prices from a page. |
| Act | Interact with the browser by clicking, typing, navigating, filling forms, and uploading or downloading. The author says consequential actions require user approval. |
| Dev | Inspect page source, styles, console output, and network activity, and make reversible edits to the page. |
These are intended capabilities as described by the builder; the article does not provide independent performance tests or a list of sites where each mode succeeds.

Which models it can use
The project author says WebBrain accepts OpenAI-compatible endpoints. That includes local inference options such as llama.cpp, Ollama, and vLLM; the author also names LM Studio, Jan, LocalAI, and GPT4All. Cloud services listed as optional choices include OpenAI, Claude, OpenRouter, Gemini, DeepSeek, Mistral, and Grok, with the user supplying a key. The article does not compare these services on cost, answer quality, or privacy terms.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
For smaller local models, Sokullu recommends a context window of at least 16k tokens, while saying 8k works in Compact mode. These are his setup recommendations, not benchmark findings. He says WebBrain trims conversation history and limits tool output as context fills. He also says it prioritizes the accessibility tree and sends screenshots only when needed.
How the Claude Code MCP connection works
The described connection runs from Claude Code to a stdio MCP server, then over a local WebSocket to the extension and the user’s tabs:

Then, according to the post, open WebBrain Settings → General → Advanced → MCP and set the extension WebSocket address to ws://127.0.0.1:17374/extension. The post says the browser’s permission gate remains active when a coding agent uses the bridge. Sokullu’s wording is: “The permission gate stays in the browser, so the coding agent still can’t do consequential things without your approval.”
Browser support and the MCP limitation
The author lists Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Firefox as supported browsers for the extension. That should not be read as MCP support in all four: the same post describes the MCP bridge as Chromium-only at the time of writing, citing Firefox MV3’s lack of an offscreen document to host it. Browser and extension compatibility can change, so check the project’s current setup guidance before relying on the bridge in a particular browser.

What the author says about privacy
Sokullu says local-model use keeps page data on the user’s machine and that WebBrain has no telemetry or account. Those statements are the project author’s privacy claims; no independent traffic or implementation audit is established here. Choosing a cloud endpoint also means the model provider’s own data-handling terms matter, and the article does not assess them.
Who WebBrain may suit
WebBrain’s described design may appeal if you want a browser-side agent that can switch between read-only questions, approved interactions, and developer-oriented inspection, or if you want a local model option. The MCP connection is specifically useful to someone who wants Claude Code to reach pages already open and signed in within the browser, while retaining the browser’s approval gate as described by the author.
