To try to download an older compatible app version, open the App Store on your iPad, sign in with the Apple Account associated with the app, and check Apps & Purchase History > Your Apps. Find the app and tap Redownload if it is still available. The App Store may offer a version compatible with your iPad, but it is not guaranteed: availability depends on the app and its developer.
How to check your App Store history
- Open the App Store on your iPad and make sure you are signed in with the Apple Account connected to the app’s purchase or download history.
- Tap your account picture, then open Apps & Purchase History and Your Apps. Labels can vary by iPadOS version.
- Find the app in the list. If it is available, tap Redownload.
- If the App Store offers a last-compatible version, review the prompt and continue only if it is the app you want.
Apple’s iPad app guide explains how to find apps and check compatibility. Its purchase-history guide says to redownload an app if it is still available in the App Store.
Why an older version may not be offered
A compatible older build is conditional, not a setting you can force. The app must remain available, and its developer controls whether submitted last-compatible versions can be downloaded. Apple documents these developer controls in its guide to making a version unavailable for download.
There is no documented public version-number picker for iPad users. Apple announced in 2013 that previous versions could be redownloaded by users who had already obtained an app, allowing some people with older devices to use apps no longer supported by the current build. That historical announcement does not guarantee that an older version of any particular app is still available today.

If the app or compatible version is missing
- Check the account: Confirm you are using the Apple Account associated with the app’s history. If you expected access through Family Sharing, check the family view and whether purchase sharing is enabled; Apple says eligible family members’ purchases can be viewed when sharing is on.
- Check the listing and compatibility: Look up the app in the App Store and review its compatibility information. Whether it can run depends on the app, your iPad model, your iPadOS version, and the versions the developer has left available.
- Ask the developer: If no compatible version appears, check the developer’s support information for supported options. If the app is absent or the older build is no longer offered, there may be no user-side switch that can make it downloadable.
Use supported download channels
Apple describes the App Store as a reviewed distribution channel and notes that some apps distributed through alternative marketplaces or developer websites may not be available there. That does not establish those channels as reliable archives of older releases. Prefer the App Store or a developer-supported option rather than treating third-party downloads as a dependable way to recover an old build.
