A memory ON/OFF switch can make an incident assistant easier to debug: rerun the same alert with retrieval enabled and disabled, then compare what the recalled history changed. In Navya Reddy’s Incident Copilot example, the switch helped expose when prior incidents surfaced a useful configuration check—and when a symptom match risked anchoring the plan on an uncertain cause.
What the memory toggle changes
Reddy describes Incident Copilot as a small FastAPI service for on-call engineers. An engineer submits an alert and symptoms; the service recalls prior incidents and generates a structured response plan. Its described endpoints are /plan, /action, /close, and /patterns.
Hindsight sits behind a single memory module. The described request path has one recall step followed by one language-model call, rather than an agent loop. A use_memory flag decides whether recall runs. With memory OFF, the same prompt, model, and temperature are used, but the memory block is set to the literal NONE. The UI can rerun the same alert with the setting changed, and the evaluation script uses the same flag.
That comparison is useful because it isolates the memory input within the described path: if the two plans differ, the engineer can inspect whether retrieved history contributed. It does not by itself prove that memory caused a better outcome; a changed recommendation still needs to be checked against incident evidence and current system state.

What Reddy’s examples showed
Pool exhaustion and a risky restart
In Reddy’s held-out pool-exhaustion example, the memory-OFF plan offered general troubleshooting suggestions. With memory ON, cross-service retrieval surfaced earlier incidents. Reddy reports that the plan then checked for a recent configuration change affecting pool settings and marked restarting with an avoid warning because it had worsened previous incidents.
The article gives one illustrative sequence in which rollback took 82 minutes, with Reddy attributing most of the delay to two harmful actions. That is a project example, not a general incident-response benchmark or a prediction of how long another incident will take.

A Kafka example and the risk of anchoring
Reddy also describes a Kafka consumer alert where cross-service recall surfaced a configuration-related incident even though the alert did not clearly indicate that cause. This can broaden a search beyond the service named in an alert, but symptom overlap is not proof of a shared cause. A retrieved incident should suggest a hypothesis to investigate, not turn that hypothesis into a confident diagnosis by itself.

The assistant’s memory is described as more than a list of final fixes. Resolved postmortems record action outcomes as WORKED, FAILED, or HARMFUL, together with incident dates. Actions and their outcomes can also be recorded while an incident is in progress. This preserves evidence about approaches that failed or made matters worse, rather than letting the final resolution obscure them.

Reddy describes several safeguards for making recall inspectable:
- Return the recalled memories alongside each plan so the engineer can see what influenced it.
- Attach incident IDs to claims so a recommendation can be traced to its source incident.
- List failed and harmful actions explicitly rather than presenting only successful fixes.
- Label suggestions as general advice when memory is absent or unrelated.
- Mark older memories with a staleness note. The six-month threshold mentioned in the article is part of this project’s prompt design, not a validated universal cutoff.
How the evaluation is described—and what it establishes
The article describes an eval_learning_curve.py script that replays incidents in date order, runs each with memory OFF and ON, grades the outputs, and retains an incident only after planning. That ordering is intended to prevent a run from seeing its own incident as prior history. The described seed data contains four failure families, with three incidents per family across services plus one held-out example.

This method and the examples explain how Reddy examined the feature, but they do not establish a broad, independently validated improvement in incident-response accuracy. The article supplies no quantified accuracy gain or evidence that memory improves every incident response. The incident counts describe this project’s example data, not a population estimate.
When an ON/OFF rerun is useful
For an on-call engineer, the switch is most useful as a diagnostic comparison when a plan includes a surprising recommendation or misses an expected historical clue. Compare the plans and the recalled records, then verify any proposed action against current telemetry, configuration, and operational procedures. Treat retrieval as contextual evidence: it can reveal what happened before, but it cannot establish that today’s incident has the same cause.
