No—you cannot guarantee the Impostor role in a live Among Us match. Innersloth says the assignment is random and that nothing you do increases your odds. For its typical 2v8 setup, Innersloth gives each player a 20% chance; that figure applies to that setup, not every possible lobby configuration. If you want to play Impostor on demand, Practice mode is the legitimate option.
Why you cannot guarantee Impostor in a live match
Innersloth’s official FAQ says Impostor assignment is random and that “Nothing you do will increase the chance of getting the Impostor role more often.” It also says chances are evenly split among players in a lobby. In a typical 2v8 setup, the FAQ gives the chance as 20% per player. The FAQ’s revision date is not established.
Random results can come in streaks: getting Impostor several times close together, or not getting it for many rounds, does not establish that your account or behavior has changed the odds. Innersloth describes this as an effect of true random chance.
What settings and filters actually change
Host role settings
Lobby settings can configure the number and probability of certain special roles or abilities, such as the Shapeshifter. These settings affect what abilities may be assigned within the game; the official documentation does not describe a setting that nominates a particular player as the base Impostor. Innersloth’s Shapeshifter role overview explains those role settings.

Lobby Finder filters
Innersloth’s 2024 description of the 16.0.0 update documents a Lobby Finder filter for the number of Impostors. It can help you find a lobby with a preferred match configuration, but it does not choose your personal role. The current interface may differ from the version documented in the 16.0.0 update notes.
How to play Impostor on demand in Practice mode
If your goal is to practice as Impostor rather than control your role in online matchmaking, Practice mode provides a role-selection option. Innersloth’s September 9, 2025 update says players can choose an Impostor role from the role-selection folders in Practice.

- Open Practice mode from the game’s main menu.
- In the Practice area, open the role-selection folders.
- Choose an Impostor role to try.
These steps describe the documented feature, not a way to force that role in a live multiplayer match. The exact interface can change; Innersloth’s September 2025 update notes explain the Practice role selection.
What to expect as roles and menus change
Among Us continues to receive role updates. Innersloth’s August 18, 2026 post for version 18.0.0 introduced the Judge Crewmate role and discussed role settings. That update does not report a change to random Impostor assignment. Check the current game menus for exact labels; the version 18.0.0 update post describes that release.
