To make a functional lamp in Minecraft, craft a redstone lamp from one glowstone block and four redstone dust, then power it with a redstone signal. If you mean a simple decorative lamp, you can build one from a post block and a torch or glowstone instead.
Craft a redstone lamp
Use a crafting table and arrange the ingredients like this:

The recipe produces a redstone lamp. Minecraft’s official guide says it gives off light level 15—the same level as fire and glowstone—but only when powered: Minecraft: Block of the Week: Redstone Lamp (March 30, 2018).

A redstone lamp is a switchable block, not a light that stays on by itself. Give it a redstone signal using one of these arrangements described in Minecraft’s official guide:

- Place an active power source next to it, such as a redstone torch, redstone block or daylight sensor.
- Power a block next to the lamp.
- Point a powered repeater or comparator at the lamp.
- Place powered redstone dust on top of the lamp or run dust so it points at the lamp.
For a straightforward manual control, connect a lever or button to the lamp with redstone dust. The lamp switches on immediately when powered; it takes a short time to switch off after the signal is removed.
Build a decorative lamp without redstone
If appearance matters more than a switchable light, make a post from a fence, cobblestone wall or end rod and place a torch or glowstone on top. These are building ideas rather than a separate lamp recipe. The Minecraft Wiki’s furniture tutorial also suggests setting a full-block light source—such as glowstone, a sea lantern or a redstone lamp—on the floor and surrounding it with trapdoors. For concealed lighting, it describes hiding a light source under carpet, which does not block the light.

Redstone lamp versus lantern
A redstone lamp is the block crafted from glowstone and redstone dust, and it needs redstone power to light. A lantern is a separate light-source item, not another name for the redstone lamp. The Minecraft Wiki distinguishes the terms on its lantern page.

Choose the right kind of lamp
- Choose a redstone lamp when you want to control a light with a switch or other redstone circuit.
- Use a torch or glowstone on a fence, wall or end rod for a quick decorative lamp.
- Use a floor-level light source with trapdoors or carpet when you want the light to blend into a room.
