On a TCL Google TV, open Settings > Accessibility > Captions and turn on Display. For many streaming videos, however, you need to start playback and enable subtitles in that app’s playback menu. TV caption preferences do not necessarily control every app, and the exact steps depend on your TCL model and software.
First, identify where the video is playing
There are two places to look for subtitles: the TV’s accessibility settings and the video app’s own playback controls. The TV setting can control caption display where supported; the app setting selects a subtitle or caption track for a particular video. TCL notes that TV caption preferences may not apply to some streaming apps. TCL’s Google TV captions instructions and app subtitle guidance cover these routes.
Menu names vary by TCL platform, model, region, and software version. The system-level path below is specifically for Google TV; it should not be assumed to apply to every TCL Smart TV.

- From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Accessibility > Captions.
- Turn on Display, then choose any caption preferences available on your TV.
If captions still do not appear in a streaming app, change them from that app’s playback controls instead. The TV preference may not override the app’s settings. TCL’s instructions describe this Google TV menu.

Enable subtitles while a streaming video is playing
- Open the streaming app and start the movie or episode. Many apps show subtitle options only during playback.
- Open the playback controls with the remote. Depending on the app, press OK/Enter, Up, or Down.
- Choose Subtitles, Closed Captions, CC, or Audio & Subtitles. Some apps use a speech-bubble or dialog icon.
- Select a language or caption track that is available, then resume playback.
The label and remote button vary by app and device. TCL’s examples include Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, Max, and Apple TV+, but the exact controls can change. See TCL’s app guidance for more information.
For a Google TV rental or purchase
If you rented or purchased the video through Google, start playback, press Down on the remote, and select Closed captions and audio. The available choices depend on the title. For a video watched through a paid subscription, Google advises contacting the service provider about subtitle and language options. Google Play’s language and caption guidance explains the distinction.

What to do on a TCL Roku TV or another platform
The system-wide caption path established here is for TCL Google TV, not every TCL platform. For a TCL Roku TV, first use the subtitle or closed-caption controls inside the streaming app. To find a system-level setting, check the manual for your exact model rather than relying on the Google TV menu path. TCL says some TVs have a built-in manual, and model-specific manuals may be available through its support site. Menu availability can differ by model and software. TCL’s information on settings and manuals describes those differences.

If subtitles are not showing
- Try another title in the same app. Subtitle tracks can vary from one movie or episode to another.
- Check the selected language. Confirm that the title offers captions or subtitles in that language; contact the streaming provider if the track you need is missing.
- Restart playback or the app. Stop and restart the video, or close and reopen the app, then check its playback menu again.
- Restart the TV or streaming device. TCL’s app guidance suggests unplugging the device for 30 seconds before reconnecting power.
- Escalate with useful details. If the problem continues, contact TCL support with the TV operating system, app name, title, season and episode if relevant, and what happens when you enable captions.
Some videos have permanent subtitles that cannot be turned off. Language and caption choices are determined by the video and service, not just the TV setting. Google’s video language guidance discusses title-specific availability.
