Build the report generator so it works in two ways: operators can choose options through prompts, while scripts and scheduled jobs pass explicit arguments and run without a terminal. Keep the prompt layer separate from the functions that collect and format report data. Bash supports both interactive keyboard-driven use and non-interactive execution from a file or string, so this design accommodates both workflows.
What should an interactive Bash report CLI do?
Bash is both a command interpreter and a programming language. Its interactive mode supports keyboard-driven work; its non-interactive mode runs commands from a file or string. That makes it possible to offer a convenient menu without making a terminal a requirement for every report run.
The GNU Bash Reference Manual, Edition 5.3, last updated May 18, 2025, is the primary reference for Bash behavior. It describes interactive features including job control, command-line editing, history, and aliases. Those shell features are useful context, but they do not prescribe how a DevOps report tool must be designed.

As an implementation choice, let the interface gather choices and pass them to report functions that also work when called directly. Avoid putting collection, formatting, and menu logic into one large block: separating them makes the same report path usable from a human session, a scheduled task, or CI.

Interactive path
Offer a prompt or menu when a person launches the tool without enough options to run. Ask only for choices the report needs, such as a target environment or reporting period. Explain valid choices and provide a clear way to cancel. These are design recommendations, not requirements imposed by Bash.
Automation path
Provide explicit command-line arguments for the same choices. A scheduled job should be able to invoke the script with all required inputs and finish without prompting. Define behavior for missing or invalid arguments rather than silently substituting a value that could produce a misleading report.

Keep the argument interface documented and stable enough for the scripts that call it. Bash’s support for non-interactive execution makes this workflow possible; the project must decide its own argument names, defaults, and validation rules.
Offer output for people and programs
Human-readable text is a practical default for an operator inspecting results directly. If another program needs to consume the report, an optional structured format such as JSON can help. Treat the report’s fields and meanings as your own interface contract: Bash does not define a DevOps-report schema, and the available sources establish no standard format for one.

ShellCheck, a static-analysis tool for shell scripts, documents several diagnostic output formats, including human-readable text and JSON. That is an example of shell tooling supporting both people and programs; it is not a DevOps report specification and does not establish that a report’s underlying data is correct.
Make failures and dependencies explicit
Decide and document the runtime environment for the particular tool. State supported operating systems and Bash versions, required external commands, and any permissions needed to gather the data. The source material does not set these choices for an individual CLI, so they should be determined from the commands the implementation actually uses.

- Validate required inputs before collecting data, and report which input is missing or invalid.
- Check the exit status of upstream commands and distinguish a failed collection from a valid empty result.
- Define whether partial data produces a partial report, a nonzero exit status, or both; make the behavior visible to both operators and calling scripts.
- Keep diagnostics separate from machine-readable report output so warnings do not corrupt a structured result.
These are project-level safeguards, not Bash-mandated behavior. They help callers interpret whether a report completed and what its contents mean.
Quote arguments and lint the script
GNU Bash style guidance recommends quoting variables populated from command-line arguments. Apply that guidance when using those values so spaces and shell metacharacters do not unintentionally change how an argument is interpreted.

Run ShellCheck during development as a static-analysis aid. It can identify potential script issues, but it cannot prove that external commands returned accurate data or that the report’s conclusions are correct. Validate inputs, command statuses, and produced data separately.
Choose portability deliberately
Portability depends on the operating systems, Bash versions, and external utilities the script relies on. Prefer broadly available commands if wide support matters; if the tool depends on platform-specific utilities, document that dependency and limit the stated compatibility accordingly. No particular portability strategy is prescribed for this project by the Bash or ShellCheck documentation.
For operators learning what matters in production, a useful question is: “What Bash skills do you actually use in production that aren’t taught in most courses?” For a report CLI, the practical answer is to make its interactive and automated paths predictable, validate its inputs and failures, and keep its output contract clear.
