If an alarm is sounding and you do not know the code, first check for immediate danger from a safe place. If you suspect fire, carbon monoxide, a break-in, or another emergency, leave and call your local emergency number. If you own the system or are authorized to manage it, contact the keyholder, monitoring company, installer, or device supplier for the approved way to silence it, recover access, or arrange service. There is no reliable universal code-free method for an unspecified alarm, and trying to bypass or disconnect it can create safety and security risks.
What to do first when an alarm is sounding
- Look for signs of immediate danger without putting yourself at risk. If you see smoke or fire, suspect carbon monoxide, notice signs of forced entry, or otherwise believe someone may be in danger, leave the premises and call the local emergency number. Do not enter or investigate if doing so could put you at risk. Ask the Police advises: “It is not advisable to put yourself in danger by making checks yourself.”
- Identify the alarm type from a safe location. An intruder alarm and a smoke or fire alarm have different risks and response procedures. Check the panel, device label, household paperwork, or provider documents if they are safely accessible.
- If there is no apparent emergency, contact the authorized person or company. Use a number in the account documents, on the panel label, or on the provider’s official website. Explain that the alarm is sounding and you do not have the code. Ask for the identity-check and authorized silencing, access-recovery, or service process.
If it is a monitored intruder alarm
Contact the monitoring station or alarm company, or ask the property’s designated keyholder to do so. The provider can verify the account and explain its approved procedure for recovering access or responding to an activation. Keep the keypad code separate from the telephone verification password: the Los Angeles Police Department warns that the keypad code “usually IS NOT THE SAME” as the password used to verify a caller.
If the monitoring station may already have requested a dispatch, explicitly ask whether it can cancel it and follow its verification process. Silencing a siren by itself does not necessarily cancel a dispatch. Austin Police Department’s Alarm Administration guidance says, “Do not call 911 to cancel alarm activations”; contact the alarm company or central station instead for a monitored false alarm. That advice concerns cancellation of an alarm activation, not a genuine emergency.
If it is a smoke or fire alarm
Treat a possible fire as real until it is safe to conclude otherwise. If there is smoke, fire, or a spreading hazard, evacuate and contact emergency services. Singapore Civil Defence Force guidance gives 995 as the fire-service number in Singapore; elsewhere, use the local emergency number.

Only use Silence or Reset when you are certain there is no emergency, and follow the manual for the exact device. If the alarm will not silence or signals a fault after the apparent cause is gone, contact the device supplier or an authorized service provider. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service says fire crews will not reset a premises alarm for its manager; the manager must reset it or arrange an on-call alarm company.
Choose the right contact for your situation

| A fire alarm continues after the apparent cause has passed | Consult the exact device manual. If it does not silence or shows a fault, contact the supplier or authorized service provider; do not assume emergency responders will reset the premises system. |
| You cannot identify the alarm provider or model | Look for a manufacturer or installer label on the panel or use household paperwork to identify the system, then contact the relevant provider or an authorized local technician. |
Why not try a generic code or disconnect the system?
Alarm systems differ by type, manufacturer, model, and monitoring arrangement. The official guidance cited here supports routes through keyholders, monitoring companies, installers, and device suppliers; it does not establish a safe universal way to defeat an unspecified alarm without authorization. Avoid guessing codes, using bypass tools, changing wiring, or disconnecting equipment. Those actions can leave a security or life-safety system impaired and may not stop monitoring or dispatch activity.

Local rules and reporting vary
Noise complaints and authority powers are location-specific. For example, UK government guidance describes limited council entry powers in designated alarm notification areas after contact attempts and specified noise duration; Sutton Council describes its own 20-minute reporting threshold. Neither example is a universal rule. Check the relevant local authority’s current procedure for prolonged nuisance noise.
