Tesla’s charging connector is commonly called the North American Charging System (NACS); its standardized form is SAE J3400. The connector can carry power for both AC and DC charging, but a matching plug alone does not guarantee that a particular car can charge at a particular station. Vehicle capability, communications, adapters and network access all affect compatibility.
What does “Tesla charging standard” mean?
In North America, “Tesla charging standard” usually means NACS: the connector and vehicle inlet design Tesla opened to other automakers and charging operators in 2022. SAE International now publishes the related standards as SAE J3400. Tesla’s announcement described its invitation to adopt the connector, while its 2024 update pointed readers to SAE for the specifications: Tesla’s 2022 announcement and Tesla’s NACS page.
NACS and SAE J3400 are closely related names, but they are not interchangeable labels for one document. NACS is the system name commonly used for the connector design; J3400 is SAE’s standards series covering requirements for it. SAE is the publisher of those documents, rather than Tesla alone maintaining the standard.
What do SAE J3400 and J3400/2 specify?
SAE J3400_202409 is a recommended practice covering general physical, electrical, functional, safety and performance requirements for conductive EV power transfer using a hand-mated coupler. Its scope includes DC and single-phase AC power through two current-carrying contacts. That describes what the coupler design supports, not the capability or speed of every vehicle or charging station. See SAE J3400_202409.

SAE J3400/2 is a separate technical standard focused on the coupler’s dimensions, including the connector and inlet. SAE’s catalog lists J3400/2_202505 as revised May 27, 2025. Check the SAE J3400/2_202505 catalog entry for its current status and document details.
Does a NACS plug work with every electric car?
No. Physical fit is only one part of a working charge session. The car and charging equipment must also support compatible electrical and communications interfaces, and network access may have separate requirements.

EPRI’s North American charging standards guide explains that passive adapters connect pins without changing signals. They work only when the vehicle recognizes the charger’s communications method. Active adapters use electronics to alter or translate signals, but that does not make every adapter suitable for every car, charger or charging network. Review EPRI’s EV charging standards and interoperability guide for the relevant interface combinations.
Before relying on an adapter, check the vehicle maker’s guidance for the exact model year and trim, the adapter’s approval and rating, and the charging network’s current requirements. A connector label or a physically fitting adapter is not proof that charging will work.

How are NACS and Supercharger access related?
A vehicle’s connector and its access to a charging network are different questions. Tesla says access to its Supercharger network is expanding to other vehicle makes and describes adapter-based access for some of them. Support can vary by automaker, model, station and current arrangement, so a general list of participating makes should not be treated as confirmation for every vehicle.
For a planned trip, confirm the specific vehicle’s eligibility with its automaker and check the network’s current site or app for the station and route. Tesla’s NACS page provides its current information, but network access arrangements can change.

What should you know about NACS adoption figures?
Figures often repeated from Tesla’s 2022 announcement are historical company claims, not current independent measurements. Tesla said NACS vehicles then outnumbered CCS vehicles two to one, that NACS charging posts exceeded the combined number of posts on CCS-equipped networks by 60%, and that its connector had been used for 20 billion EV charging miles. Those figures describe Tesla’s claims at the time of the announcement; they should not be read as current market share, station counts or independently verified totals.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe cited material does not establish a current, independently verified market-share figure for connector adoption. If evaluating present-day adoption or access, use current data with a clear date and source rather than extrapolating from the 2022 comparisons.

Is NACS also a home-charging decision?
The connector standard does not determine whether a home installation is suitable. Home charging depends on the vehicle, the charging equipment and the home’s electrical installation. Tesla provides North American installation resources for its Universal Wall Connector in its Wall Connector support guide. Consult current equipment documentation and a qualified installer about the specific installation.
