To download IDLE, install Python from Python.org’s downloads page. IDLE is included with the standard Python distribution, so a separate IDLE download is usually unnecessary. After installing Python, open IDLE from the installed Python folder or your system’s app search.

What IDLE is—and why you install Python to get it

IDLE is Python’s basic editor and interactive interpreter environment. You can use it to enter commands in a Shell window and create Python files in an Editor window. The Python documentation describes IDLE as part of the standard Python distribution, rather than a separate program you ordinarily need to download.

Start at Python.org Downloads and check the release and system requirements shown for your computer. As of October 7, 2026, the page listed Python 3.14.8, released September 30, 2026; the live page may now show a newer release.

Install Python and IDLE on Windows

  1. Open Python.org Downloads and select the current Windows download route.
  2. Follow the current instructions for the Python install manager or the installer option appropriate for your computer. Python 3.14.8’s release page directs Windows users to the install manager and also lists installer options by architecture. Check the current official guidance before choosing an architecture; the release page labels its 64-bit installer recommended and ARM64 experimental.
  3. When installation is complete, search the Start menu for IDLE. If it is not listed, consult the install manager or installer documentation to check whether the relevant component was installed, then use Python’s official troubleshooting guidance.

The Windows installation flow and labels can change. Use the current Python 3.14.8 release page and its linked install-manager instructions rather than relying on older screenshots or fixed menu paths.

Install Python and IDLE on macOS

  1. On Python.org Downloads, choose the macOS release and check its release page for compatibility with your version of macOS and Mac hardware.
  2. Download the `.pkg` installer, open it, and follow the Installer app’s prompts. The official macOS guide says the standard installation includes a versioned Python folder in Applications containing IDLE and Python Launcher.
  3. If the installer presents Install Certificates.command in the versioned Python folder, open it to complete the documented certificate step.
  4. Open the versioned Python folder in Applications and launch IDLE.

Current python.org macOS builds are universal2 for supported Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The macOS guide describes the supported range as typically macOS 10.15 Catalina and later, but check the specific release page for the exact release’s compatibility. Leave Apple’s system-managed Python at /usr/bin/python3 in place; the python.org installation can coexist with it.

Which download route applies to your computer?

System Python download and installation Where to look for IDLE Important qualification
Windows Use the current Windows route on Python.org; Python 3.14.8 directs users to the Python install manager and lists installer options. Search the Start menu for IDLE or use the launch method documented for your selected installation. Check current instructions and your computer’s architecture; the 3.14.8 page labels its 64-bit installer recommended and ARM64 experimental.
macOS Download and run the compatible `.pkg` installer from Python.org. Open IDLE in the versioned Python folder under Applications. Check the exact release’s macOS compatibility and run the certificate command if presented.

If IDLE will not open on macOS 27.0

Python 3.14.8’s release page warns that IDLE and other tkinter applications can hang when opening dialogs on macOS 27.0. If that describes your setup, check the release page’s linked issue for status and updates before treating the behavior as a failed installation. Python.org’s Tcl/Tk page explains that current python.org installers bundle Tcl/Tk 8.6 for IDLE and tkinter, but its older release-specific table entries should not be read as specifications for a current installer.
