If your TV picture suddenly looks cropped, stretched, zoomed, or smaller after a software update, check the television’s picture-size or aspect-ratio setting first. A reset to default settings is one possible explanation: Samsung says video and audio settings might reset after an update. That does not prove the update caused the change on your TV, so compare the affected input with a built-in app or another source before assuming there is a hardware fault.
Identify what changed on the screen
“Doesn’t fit” can describe several different problems, and the right setting depends on the symptom:
- Edges are cut off: The picture may be enlarged or overscanned. Look for a full-image option such as Fit to Screen or a model-specific equivalent.
- People or objects look unnaturally wide or tall: The image may be stretched. Choose a normal or original aspect ratio rather than a zoom mode.
- The picture is zoomed in: A Zoom or similar setting may be active. Return to the normal ratio or a full-image option.
- Black bars appear: They may be part of the program’s aspect ratio, not a fault. Do not stretch a film or 4:3 program just to fill a widescreen panel.
- The picture is smaller than before: Check the TV’s size and ratio controls, then compare another app or input to see whether the change is limited to one source.
Samsung says picture settings may reset after an update, but that guidance does not establish that every update—or every TV brand—resets picture fit. The symptom alone cannot confirm that an update caused the change or that the TV has a firmware defect.
Check the TV’s picture-size setting
Open the picture or screen menu and look for a control named Picture Size, Aspect Ratio, Screen, Wide Mode, Fit to Screen, or Just Scan. Names and availability vary by model, year, input, and software version. Start with the manufacturer’s normal or original-ratio option. If the edges are cropped and the TV offers it, try the full-image setting. Avoid using Zoom as a general fix because it can cut off part of the picture.

On supported Samsung TVs, Samsung’s picture settings guidance describes Fit to Screen as showing the full image without cutting off part of it. The option may not be available for every model or signal.
Examples of manufacturer menu paths
These are examples, not universal instructions. Samsung notes that screens can differ by model and year; LG’s route varies by webOS generation. If a label or path does not match, use the manual for your exact model.

- Samsung: Settings (All Settings) > Picture > Expert Settings > Picture Size Settings. Options documented by Samsung include 16:9 Standard, Custom, 4:3, and Fit to Screen; availability varies.
- LG, cited webOS 22 route: Settings > All Settings > Picture > Aspect Ratio > User Selection. LG’s guidance suggests 16:9 or Original Ratio, depending on the picture and model. Older webOS menus use different paths.
- Sony, cited Help Guide route: Settings > BRAVIA Settings > Screen, then choose a Wide mode option that suits the picture.
See the manufacturers’ instructions for their model-specific options: Samsung, LG, and Sony.
Check whether the problem follows one source
Test the TV’s built-in menu or an app, then compare the external device where you noticed the problem, such as a cable box or console. If the TV’s own content looks normal but one connected device does not, inspect that device’s output resolution, scaling, and aspect-ratio settings. A set-top box may control picture size independently of the TV.

Sony also notes that Wide mode can change with the input or signal, and that displayed size depends on the signal content. Its guidance is a reminder that a change visible on one channel or device does not necessarily mean the TV’s global picture setting changed. If the picture still does not fit after checking the TV’s size setting and comparing sources, consult the support page or manual for the exact model. If the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps do not resolve it, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair service. A picture-fit symptom after an update, by itself, is not evidence that the panel is damaged or that a replacement TV is needed.
