An open-source TDEE calculator is verifiable when a reader can identify its equation, inspect how inputs and units flow through the code, and reproduce its outputs—not simply because its source is public. It still estimates energy expenditure; it does not measure an individual’s metabolism. The National Academies describes total energy expenditure (TEE, often called TDEE) as resting or basal metabolism, the thermic effect of food, and physical activity. Objective measurement can use doubly labeled water over days or weeks, a fundamentally different process from applying a prediction equation to user inputs. National Academies, Dietary Reference Intakes for Energy (2023), Chapter 5.

Decide what the calculator estimates before choosing an equation

A calculator may estimate resting or basal energy first, then apply an activity factor to estimate daily expenditure. Another approach predicts total energy expenditure more directly. These are different model designs, not interchangeable labels: basal or resting energy alone is not total daily expenditure.

The National Academies describes physical activity level (PAL) as the ratio of TEE to BMR. Its 2023 report uses age- and sex-specific groupings and age-specific activity categories in its own TEE equations, with distinct equations for children and adults. It reports that body-composition-based equations performed slightly better than height-and-weight models for adults, but not children. Those findings characterize the report’s equations and populations; they do not establish a universal best formula for every calculator.

Compare the method choices, not just the displayed number

Example Calculation approach Inputs and activity handling What the example establishes
LGUG2Z’s Go command-line project, tdee Averages BMR estimates from Mifflin–St Jeor, original Harris–Benedict, and revised Harris–Benedict formulas, then applies a lifestyle modifier. Requests height, weight, age, and sex; supports metric or imperial height and weight. Activity is represented by a lifestyle modifier. One open-source design. Averaging formulas does not, by itself, show that the result is more accurate. Project README.
OpenNutriTracker Its source comments identify an IOM equation source. The code describes a midpoint output for non-binary users without an explicit hormone profile. Its comments characterize this as a comfort and privacy choice, not a statistical baseline; they say the referenced IOM equations are sex-stratified and that the source offers no published non-binary baseline. A project-specific rationale, not a validated clinical approach or a universal recommendation. TDEE calculation source.
Mifflin-St Jeor Calculator educational site Describes estimating resting energy with Mifflin–St Jeor, then applying a standard activity factor for total daily expenditure. Resting-energy estimate plus a separate activity factor. The site says it publishes an 840-profile formula-comparison dataset for verification. Attribute that claim to the site; it is not the original Mifflin–St Jeor paper or a regulator. About This Site.

These examples illustrate choices a developer can inspect. They do not settle which equation is right for a particular user or life stage. Before implementation, document the population and life stage an equation was designed or evaluated for, whether it predicts resting energy or TEE, the required inputs and categories, and how activity enters the calculation.

Make every step reproducible

A useful implementation lets a reader trace values from input to result. Publish the exact equation and source, show intermediate values, and explain conversions and rounding. If the calculator uses separate formula branches, document which inputs select each branch. If activity is a multiplier or category, expose its mapping rather than hiding it behind labels such as “lightly active.”

  • Specify inputs: list units, accepted ranges, supported ages, category meanings, and how missing or unsupported values are handled.
  • Specify conversions: state whether conversion occurs before formula arithmetic and how many digits are retained at each stage.
  • Specify rounding: identify whether rounding is only for display or also affects later calculation.
  • Show a worked case: provide input values, converted values, each equation term, activity adjustment, and final unrounded and displayed outputs.
  • Version the method: record equation and activity-mapping changes so that a later result can be tied to the version that produced it.

Do not infer exact conversion, range, or rounding behavior from a project’s general description. Those details should be explicit in the calculator you build.

Test the implementation separately from the prediction

Tests can establish that software faithfully implements a published formula. They cannot establish that its output equals a particular person’s measured expenditure. Keep these two questions separate: “Does the code calculate the stated model?” and “How closely does that model predict an individual’s actual TEE?”

  1. Create reference cases that can be calculated manually from the published formula. Cover each equation branch, both supported unit systems, boundary inputs, and activity choices.
  2. Test conversions independently from formula arithmetic. This helps locate whether a mismatch comes from unit handling or the equation implementation.
  3. Test invalid and missing inputs, including zero or negative height and weight and unsupported ages. Reject or clearly handle them instead of returning plausible-looking estimates.
  4. Compare intermediate values as well as final output, so a test failure reveals the stage where results diverge.
  5. Keep regression tests under version control and update them deliberately when a formula, conversion rule, or activity mapping changes.
  6. Label the oracle: expected values derived from the published equation verify arithmetic and implementation, not physiological accuracy.

A 2025 application paper describes black-box checks and comparisons with manual calculations. That supports functional and arithmetic validation; it does not prove that a prediction is accurate for an individual. Present uncertainty without turning it into a personal error guarantee

The National Academies reports standard errors of predicted TEE at average age, height, and weight ranging from 96 to 342 kcal/d — National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2023. The range applies across the report’s analyzed age-sex strata; it is not a universal error bar for every equation, calculator, or individual.

For an external validation analysis described in the report, predicted and observed TEE correlations ranged from 0.92 to 0.97 — National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2023. The analysis covered 65 studies representing 5,056 participants, with predicted and observed values reported for n=144. These are findings for that report’s methods and validation data, not an accuracy guarantee for an open-source implementation.

Make representation choices visible

Equation inputs can encode assumptions about sex categories, hormone profiles, age, and activity. State how the calculator handles each, including cases its chosen equation does not explicitly represent. OpenNutriTracker’s documented midpoint for some non-binary users is one project’s stated comfort and privacy choice; it should not be presented as a statistically validated baseline. An interface decision can be transparent without claiming that the underlying prediction has been validated for every user.
