Bootstrap’s accordion behavior comes from its Collapse plugin; the plus and minus signs are a visual customization, not the default Bootstrap 5.3 indicator. The example below uses Bootstrap 5.3 markup and CSS to show a plus while a panel is closed and a minus while it is open.
“V17” is not identified in the available Bootstrap documentation as a release or implementation, so this guide does not treat it as one.
How the plus/minus accordion works
Bootstrap connects each trigger button to a collapsible panel using the button’s data-bs-target selector and the panel’s matching id. Clicking the button lets the Collapse JavaScript plugin change the panel state. The button’s aria-expanded value and collapsed class reflect that state; CSS can use the class to switch the visible symbol.

Replacing it with plus and minus signs is a deliberate styling change. The official documentation describes custom CSS and Sass overrides for changing the indicator: Bootstrap 5.3 Accordion.

Bootstrap 5.3 plus/minus example
This example uses Bootstrap 5.3’s data-bs-* attributes. It starts with the first panel open and the second closed. Include Bootstrap 5.3’s CSS and JavaScript bundle in your page; the bundle supplies the Collapse behavior.

}The horizontal bar remains visible in both states; the vertical bar is hidden when the button is expanded. That creates a plus for a collapsed panel and a minus for an expanded one. The symbol is decorative, so it is hidden from assistive technology with aria-hidden="true"; the button’s text and expanded state communicate the control’s purpose.

Keep the initial state consistent
The first item is open at page load. Bootstrap’s documented open-state pattern uses show on the panel, removes collapsed from the trigger, and sets aria-expanded="true". The closed item uses collapse without show, has the collapsed class, and sets aria-expanded="false". Keep all three indicators aligned; otherwise, the icon, visible panel, and accessibility state can disagree.

Choose whether panels close each other
Bootstrap 5.3 documents two behaviors. To make opening one panel close another, add data-bs-parent="#helpAccordion" to each .accordion-collapse element. To allow multiple panels to remain open, omit that attribute, as in the example above. See the framework’s accordion examples for its grouped and stay-open patterns.

Version and keyboard considerations
This code is specifically for Bootstrap 5.3. Bootstrap 5 uses data-bs-toggle and data-bs-target; do not assume those attributes work unchanged in earlier versions. Bootstrap 5.2 added local CSS variables for accordion customization while continuing to support Sass customization, as described in its accordion documentation.
If maintaining a Bootstrap 4 implementation, consult its version-specific Collapse documentation and verify keyboard interactions against your project’s accessibility requirements. Bootstrap 4.0 notes that its Collapse implementation does not cover every optional keyboard interaction in the ARIA accordion pattern.

Common implementation errors
- The icon never changes: Confirm the trigger’s class changes between
collapsedand expanded state, and that the icon element is inside the button. - The wrong panel toggles: Make the selector in
data-bs-targetmatch exactly one panel’sid. - The page starts in a contradictory state: Match the panel’s
showclass with the button’scollapsedclass andaria-expandedvalue. - The panel does not open: Check that Bootstrap’s JavaScript bundle is loaded and that the markup uses attributes appropriate to the Bootstrap version in use.
