An Ultra High-Definition TV (UHDTV) is a television format with higher spatial resolution than conventional high-definition television. In everyday TV shopping, UHD usually means either 4K at 3840 × 2160 pixels or 8K at 7680 × 4320 pixels. The UHD label describes resolution and related image formats; by itself, it does not promise HDR or 4K streaming.
What does Ultra High-Definition TV mean?
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) describes UHDTV as a television application designed to improve the viewing experience, especially through greater spatial resolution and a wider field of view. ITU-R Report BT.2246-4 puts the goal this way: “UHDTV is a television application that is intended to provide viewers with an enhanced visual experience primarily by offering a wide field of view that virtually covers all of the human visual field with appropriate sizes of screens relevant to usage at home and in public places.”
For consumers, the most useful distinction is the number of pixels in the picture. ITU-R’s 2015 report gives these UHDTV formats:
| Format | Resolution | Pixels per frame |
|---|---|---|
| 4K UHD | 3840 × 2160 | 8,294,400 |
| 8K UHD | 7680 × 4320 | 33,177,600 |
The pixel totals are calculated from those dimensions. An 8K image has four times as many pixels as a 4K image, but the numbers alone do not establish which TV will look better overall.

Is UHD the same as 4K?
In ordinary television shopping, “4K UHD” is the familiar UHD tier, with a resolution of 3840 × 2160. UHD is the broader format family: it also includes 8K UHD at 7680 × 4320. The term “4K” is sometimes used loosely, so the stated pixel dimensions are the clearest way to identify a television’s resolution.
The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) has a consumer definition for a 4K Ultra High-Definition display that involves more than its resolution. Its criteria include at least 8 million active pixels; at least 3840 horizontal and 2160 vertical pixels; a native aspect ratio of 16:9 or wider; upconversion capability; specified HDMI input support; color processing; and a minimum bit depth. This is CTA’s published consumer definition, not a claim that every UHD-related standard or jurisdiction uses the same checklist.

What is the difference between UHD and HDR?
UHD and high dynamic range (HDR) describe different image attributes. UHD concerns resolution and related image formats; HDR concerns the handling and presentation of a wider range of brightness and color. ITU’s 2016 announcement describes HDR-TV as a development building on UHDTV.

Does a UHD TV automatically support 4K streaming?
No. A UHD resolution says what a display can show, not whether the television can connect to a service, decode its video, or play its 4K content. CTA’s Connected 4K UHD definition adds IP video decoding, networking, and application services to its 4K UHD display criteria.
To watch 4K streams, the display needs a compatible content source and a capable delivery and playback path. That can involve the TV’s connected platform or an external device, as well as access to content delivered in 4K. A UHD screen on its own does not establish any of those capabilities.
