To change how much recent gameplay Xbox Game Bar keeps available to save, open Settings > Gaming > Captures and adjust the duration under Record what happened. The menu options can vary by Windows version; choose from the choices displayed on your PC.
Change the background recording length
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Select Gaming, then Captures.
- Find the background recording setting labeled Record what happened.
- Use its duration dropdown to select how much recent gameplay to keep available for a clip.
A current walkthrough reports choices such as 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes, but the complete list is not confirmed for every Windows 11 build. If your menu offers different choices, use the options shown on your system. Geek Rewind’s walkthrough describes the setting and example durations.
Save a recent clip or record manually
With background recording enabled, press Windows+Alt+G to save a recent clip. Microsoft’s settings catalog labels this shortcut as recording the last 30 seconds. Its documentation does not establish whether that label or shortcut duration changes to match a longer duration selected in Settings, so do not assume the shortcut saves the full configured interval. Microsoft’s Windows settings catalog lists the shortcut.
For a recording that begins when you press the shortcut, use Windows+Alt+R to start and press it again to stop. Microsoft says the resulting video is an MP4 saved under VideosCaptures. Microsoft’s Game Bar recording instructions cover manual capture and the save location.

Background buffer length is not manual recording length
The Record what happened duration controls the recent gameplay buffer used for saving a clip after the action. It is different from a manual recording, which you start and stop with Windows+Alt+R. The sources cited here do not establish a separate maximum length for manual recordings, nor do they quantify storage use or performance effects of changing the background interval.
