The strongest interview evidence points to the Akai MPC3000, a sampler and MIDI sequencer Dr. Dre said he loved using. That makes it a key part of his beat-making workflow—not proof that one machine made every iconic Dre beat.
What machine did Dr. Dre use?
In an interview republished by Rapchive, Dre answered a question about his equipment directly: “I love using the MPC3000.” The interview also describes him setting up four or five MPC3000 units so he would not have to keep changing disks. That is a description of his equipment arrangement, not a claim that every song used those machines.
A September 2001 interview in Studio Sound places the Akai MPC3000 at the center of his MIDI-sequencing setup, describing it as “the brain of the whole thing.” Together, the interviews make the MPC3000 the best-supported answer to the question of what beat-making machine Dre used.

Was it a drum machine?
The MPC3000 is more precisely described here as a sampler/sequencer or beat-making machine. Calling it a drum machine is understandable shorthand, but can imply a conventional drum synthesizer and obscure its role in sampling and MIDI sequencing. The interviews identify the MPC3000 as a sequencer within a broader studio workflow.

Does that mean every iconic Dre beat was made on an MPC3000?
No. The interviews establish Dre’s preference for the MPC3000 and its central role in a sequencing setup; they do not assign the machine to every track, album, or particular recording. A claim about the equipment behind a named song needs recording-specific evidence, such as a direct account from a participant or session documentation.
Claims involving other vintage samplers, including the MPC60 or E-mu SP-1200, likewise should not be treated as established for a particular Dre recording without that evidence.
