You can run a moving 3-D Earth as a Windows wallpaper by loading the earth-wallpaper.html project into Lively Wallpaper. It renders a globe with a day/night boundary, city lights, procedural clouds and stars; it is not a stream of current satellite weather images. The project README lists Lively Wallpaper v2.x on Windows 10 or 11 as its target setup.
What this Earth wallpaper shows
The earth-wallpaper project README describes its result as “A photorealistic, real-time 3-D Earth rendered entirely in the browser using Three.js and custom GLSL shaders.” The globe combines a day-and-night boundary with NASA-attributed surface and city-light textures, procedural clouds, an atmospheric rim and a star field. Lively Wallpaper properties let users adjust the display.
Here, “real-time” describes the rendering: the globe and its effects are drawn as an animation. The cloud layer is procedural, not a feed of current cloud or weather observations. The README states a 60 fps target and an option to lock rendering at 30 fps to reduce GPU use; those are project claims, not independently measured performance guarantees.
How to add it to Lively Wallpaper
The project README documents this setup for Lively Wallpaper v2.x on Windows 10 or Windows 11. It does not establish a minimum GPU specification or guarantee identical results on every PC.

- Get the project files. Download or clone the earth-wallpaper repository and locate
earth-wallpaper.html. - Open Lively Wallpaper. Choose Add Wallpaper, then From File.
- Select the HTML file. Choose
earth-wallpaper.htmlfrom the project folder. The README says the first load requires an internet connection because textures are fetched from NASA servers. - Check the web runtime if the wallpaper is blank. The README recommends checking WebView2. It says WebView2 ships with Windows 11 and directs Windows 10 users to install the WebView2 Runtime.
These are the repository maintainer’s instructions; they have not been independently verified here. If the wallpaper does not load, check that the HTML file and any project files remain together, confirm that the PC has internet access on first load, and verify WebView2 before trying again.
Optional local textures
The README lists two optional local texture files: world.topo.bathy.200401.3x5400x2700.png (5400 × 2700) and BlackMarble_2016_3km.jpg (approximately 13,500 × 6,750). The project can use local files instead of fetching those textures over the network. The larger images require additional disk space and may use more memory; the project documentation does not quantify that cost.

Where the globe’s imagery comes from
The project README records these attributions for the image assets:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Day surface: “Blue Marble: Next Generation — Reto Stöckli, NASA Earth Observatory, 2004.”
- Night-side city lights: “Earth’s City Lights — NASA Earth Observatory / Robert Simmon, 2000.”
The README says NASA imagery is public domain and distinguishes those image assets from the repository’s MIT-licensed code. That statement describes the project’s licensing explanation; anyone republishing an image should check the specific asset’s source and terms.

If you want updated satellite observations instead
A rendered globe gives you a consistent animated view, while satellite-wallpaper tools periodically fetch observed imagery. Those images show particular satellite views and regions rather than a single continuously updated, global weather map. The figures below come from the projects’ own documentation, not from a controlled comparison.
| Project | What it displays | Update and network details | Windows route or support |
|---|---|---|---|
| SpaceEye | Publicly available satellite imagery; its README lists 12 views from five geostationary satellites and acknowledges NOAA STAR and RAMMB at Colorado State University as providers. | The README says images download approximately every 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the view. | The README lists Windows and Mac availability. |
| Satpaper | Near-real-time imagery from RAMMB SLIDER. The README lists GOES East, GOES West, Himawari, Meteosat 9 and Meteosat 10 regions. | The README warns that downloads are typically around 20 MB every 10 to 15 minutes; size varies by satellite and image. | The README says Windows 10 and 11 are automatically supported. |
| liewa | Near-real-time Earth pictures, with options described for geostationary satellites, Sentinel, Solar Dynamics Observatory and NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day. | The README does not state a general refresh interval or download size. | The README describes support for Windows, Linux and macOS and points Windows users to a release installer. |
These descriptions do not establish that each project is actively maintained or that every listed feed is currently available in every region. Check the relevant project page if a particular satellite, viewing area or current feed matters to you.

Which type should you choose?
- Choose the rendered globe if you want an animated Earth aesthetic, adjustable Lively properties and the option to use local textures. Its clouds are procedural, so it does not provide current cloud observations.
- Choose an observation-based tool if your priority is imagery refreshed from satellite sources. Check its satellite views and geographic coverage, refresh cadence and expected network use before installing.
- Consider your PC’s resources. The project describes a 30 fps option intended to save GPU power, but no independent benchmark or measured battery impact is available. Actual performance and power use can vary with the PC and settings.
