DHCP autoconfiguration means a device gets network settings from a DHCP service instead of having every setting entered manually. A DHCP server can supply an IP address and other configuration parameters. The address is not necessarily temporary: DHCPv4 supports permanent automatic assignments, time-limited dynamic leases, and administrator-assigned addresses.
What DHCP autoconfiguration means
DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, is a client-server protocol for delivering configuration information to network hosts. When a device joins a network, its DHCP client requests configuration; a DHCP server responds with an offer, and the client requests the configuration it will use. The server’s policy determines what is available, including address pools, reservations, and options. RFC 2131 defines DHCP’s purpose and exchange.
The term “autoconfiguration” describes how the device receives its settings, not a guarantee that it will reach the Internet. DHCP can provide settings such as an address and other network parameters, but it does not itself provide Internet service, perform DNS registration, or configure routers.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes DHCP always assign a temporary IP address?
No. DHCPv4 defines three address-allocation methods, so an automatically configured address is not always a temporary lease:
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| DHCPv4 allocation method | What happens |
|---|---|
| Automatic | The server assigns the client a permanent address. |
| Dynamic | The server assigns an address for a limited period, or until the client relinquishes it. |
| Manual | An administrator assigns the address, and DHCP conveys it to the client. |
These allocation models are specified in RFC 2131. Whether a particular address changes depends on the server’s configuration and the network’s policy.
What happens when DHCP is unavailable?
If a device cannot obtain usable IPv4 configuration from DHCP, some operating systems or network configurations may use IPv4 link-local addressing. The host selects an address in 169.254/16, a mechanism defined separately from DHCP by RFC 3927.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
A 169.254/16 address supports communication only with devices on the same physical or logical link. It is not a routed address for reaching other networks or the Internet. Seeing one can therefore indicate that ordinary routable IPv4 configuration was unavailable, although fallback behavior varies by system and network.
Is DHCP the same as IPv6 SLAAC?
No. SLAAC, or Stateless Address Autoconfiguration, is an IPv6 mechanism in which a host forms an address using a network prefix and an interface identifier; it also generates an IPv6 link-local address. SLAAC can enable local communication without a DHCPv6 server on the link. See RFC 4862.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
DHCPv6 is a separate protocol for supplying IPv6 network parameters, addresses, and prefixes. The current specification, RFC 9915, published in January 2026, obsoletes RFC 8415 and allows DHCPv6 to operate alongside SLAAC or in its place. The two methods are therefore not universally exclusive.
