A stopped NTP service can leave a virtual machine without its intended ongoing time source, but the title’s “67 days” does not establish that this happened—or that clock error accumulated for that long. The platform, guest OS, migration event, offset, and daemon history are unknown. Start by recording the current state and identifying which clock source the VM is actually using; then restore one appropriate synchronization path and verify the result.
What “67 days of drift” does—and does not—tell you
The phrase could describe an observed clock offset, the time since synchronization last worked, or simply the period covered by an incident report. Those are different things. Without measurements over time, it does not establish a drift rate or prove that migration stopped the daemon. A failed guest time service is a plausible cause of lost synchronization, but it is not a root cause until the service, configured source, and host integration state are checked.
Timekeeping in a VM can involve the guest operating system, a guest time daemon, and a hypervisor or cloud integration provider. The active source depends on the platform and configuration. For example, Microsoft says Azure Linux VMs need a running time service and an accurate source; the Azure VMICTimeSync provider alone does not continuously synchronize the guest, though it can correct time after host-maintenance events. Microsoft’s Azure Linux time-synchronization guide describes that platform-specific behavior.
Migration or host maintenance may affect guest time, but the mechanism and impact vary by platform. The Azure guide describes a memory-preserving maintenance example in which a VM can pause for up to 30 seconds; that is not a typical migration duration, nor evidence about the incident implied by this title.

What to capture before changing the clock
Preserve enough information to distinguish a timezone display issue from an unsynchronized system clock and to avoid losing useful incident evidence.
- Record the guest’s displayed local time, UTC time, timezone, and the time shown by a trusted reference.
- Record the current time source, time-service status, synchronization status, and measured offset, including whether the guest is ahead of or behind the reference.
- Save relevant guest logs and host or cloud events around the migration, maintenance, and time-service failure.
- Establish what “67 days” means in the incident record: elapsed time without sync, measured offset, or another description.
- Note whether the VM has a special role, such as a domain controller, and whether applications rely on strict time ordering.
Timezone configuration affects how an instant is displayed and interpreted; it does not itself synchronize the system clock. Microsoft’s Hyper-V Linux troubleshooting guidance includes checking the system clock and timezone as part of diagnosing application time discrepancies. See the Hyper-V guidance for Linux guests.
Identify the active time-source chain
Do not enable every available time-sync option by default. First determine which service and provider are configured, whether they are healthy, and which one is intended to be authoritative for this VM.

Windows guest
Microsoft recommends starting with w32tm /query /status to inspect Windows Time status and source. For a domain-joined system, determine whether it should follow the domain time hierarchy; Microsoft’s Windows Time documentation also describes tracing the hierarchy with tools such as w32tm /stripchart and domain monitoring. A reported source is useful only when it is reachable and appropriate for the machine’s role.
Linux guest on Azure
Check which time daemon is installed and running, and inspect its peers or reference clock. Microsoft’s Azure guide identifies ntpq -p as a way to confirm whether ntpd is synchronizing. The guide also recommends checking Hyper-V integration modules with lsmod | grep hv_utils and inspecting available PTP devices and their clock_name when Azure host PTP is part of the configuration.
On newer Azure images, Microsoft says a stable /dev/ptp_hyperv symlink may be available. Prefer it over hard-coding /dev/ptp0 or /dev/ptp1, whose numbering can vary. Image and kernel generation matter, so confirm the device and daemon configuration for the actual VM rather than assuming the same setup applies everywhere.

Linux guest on Hyper-V
Check whether the guest uses ntpd, chronyd, or another distribution-provided time service, and confirm its configured sources are reachable. Microsoft warns that Linux guests can have inconsistent timekeeping when Hyper-V host TimeSync and NTP are used together. Its guidance is to choose the synchronization path appropriate to the distribution and configuration rather than run both indiscriminately. The right choice depends on the hypervisor or cloud, guest OS and kernel support, source accuracy and reachability, and the workload’s time hierarchy. These options are not interchangeable across platforms.

The comparison is a diagnostic aid, not a universal configuration recipe. Microsoft’s Azure and Hyper-V guidance covers different platform behaviors; confirm the recommendation for the actual distribution, hypervisor, cloud, and workload before changing providers.

Restore synchronization and correct the offset cautiously
Once the intended source is clear, repair the failed service or provider and correct the clock using the method supported by that environment. A large correction may affect logs, authentication, transactions, and applications that assume time moves steadily. Avoid a blanket instruction to step the clock backward or forward; follow the system’s operational change procedure and consider application behavior before making a correction.
There is also a narrow Windows-on-Hyper-V behavior worth distinguishing from general drift. Microsoft Support says the Hyper-V Time Synchronization Service will not correct a guest clock that is more than five seconds ahead of the host. Microsoft describes this as by design; the support page was last updated February 12, 2026. This is a specific ahead-of-host condition, not a general accuracy limit and not a rule for other platforms or a guest that is behind. Read the Microsoft Support article on this Hyper-V behavior.

These are not universal remediation steps; verify applicability and operational impact before using them.

Verify recovery and check dependent systems
After the correction, confirm that the intended service is healthy and synchronized, the source is correct, the offset is within the environment’s acceptable range, and the timezone is configured properly. Then check applications that depend on time, especially authentication, scheduled work, and systems that correlate events across machines. Microsoft notes that time synchronization matters for security and event correlation. Delay time-sensitive application startup until synchronization has completed where the platform and service design allow it.
Keep monitoring the selected source and offset long enough to confirm the clock stays synchronized after the original migration or maintenance conditions have passed. If the problem returns, investigate source reachability, service restarts, integration-provider state, and subsequent host events rather than assuming the initial correction fixed the underlying failure.
