For a polished controller paint job, match the coating to the shell, prepare and mask the parts carefully, apply thin coats, and wait for the coating’s stated cure time before reassembly. Disassembly can make it easier to reach the shell, but it is optional and carries model-specific risks.
Choose a coating and application method
Start by identifying the controller model and the shell material or finish, then choose a coating whose label says it is suitable for plastic. Do not assume every controller shell accepts the same paint. Test the coating on an inconspicuous area and follow its label for surface preparation, application, ventilation, recoating, and cure time. Krylon’s surface-preparation guidance discusses plastic, while its Harmony instructions are specific to that product.
Spray paint formulated for plastic can suit broad, even coverage; brush or airbrush application can offer more control for detailed designs. The controller-specific tutorial from Angelus Direct demonstrates brush and airbrush approaches, but it is a vendor tutorial, not evidence that its method or materials work on every shell. There is no universal best method: choose based on compatibility, the finish you want, your workspace and tools, and how well you can keep paint away from moving parts.

- Plastic-compatible paint or coating, plus any primer or other preparation product required by its label.
- A fine-grit sanding sponge or sandpaper if the chosen process calls for light sanding.
- Cleaning cloths and masking material that are compatible with the shell and paint system.
- A protected, ventilated work area, following the paint label’s safety directions.
- Model-specific tools only if you plan to disassemble the controller.
Tools vary by model. For certain Elite Series 2 procedures, Microsoft specifies a plastic pry tool and TR8 security driver; those are not universal controller tools. Check the instructions for your exact model rather than forcing a tool that does not fit.

Decide whether to disassemble
Painting a removable outer shell can avoid opening the electronics. If you choose to open the controller, power it down and follow the exact model’s service instructions. Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 safety and repair instructions advise removing removable accessories before opening the top case, gently releasing clips with a plastic pry tool, and taking care because plastic snaps can be damaged. Keep removed hardware organized, and keep paint, sanding dust, and solvents away from the battery and electronics.
If you are not comfortable following the model-specific procedure, do not improvise. Limit the project to a removable shell or use a replacement shell instead. Disassembly is not required for every paint job, and opening electronics introduces risks unrelated to the coating itself.

Prepare and mask the shell
- Separate the parts you intend to paint. Work only on the shell pieces, not the assembled controller or exposed electronics.
- Lightly sand if appropriate. The Angelus Direct controller tutorial recommends light sanding with a fine-grit sanding sponge. Follow the selected coating’s preparation directions; do not sand a surface if the product or shell instructions advise against it.
- Clean and dry the surface. Remove dust and residue using a cleaning method compatible with both the shell and the paint system. Do not assume a particular solvent is safe for every controller plastic.
- Mask functional areas. Cover openings, seams, button and thumbstick areas, and any surface that must remain unpainted or fit against another part. No universal paint-clearance measurement is established, so mask carefully rather than relying on a guessed gap.
- Test first. Krylon’s Harmony instructions recommend testing an inconspicuous area when working with plastic or unusual materials. Check that the coating behaves as expected before painting visible surfaces.
Preparation requirements can vary by coating system. PPG’s PD-0200C bare-plastic refinishing procedure says that, in its system, bare plastic must be properly cleaned and coated with adhesion promoter before undercoat. That is evidence of system-specific preparation needs, not a universal controller-paint recipe; follow the instructions for the coating you actually select.

Apply thin coats and allow the coating to cure
- Apply a light first coat. Build coverage gradually rather than trying to achieve a solid finish in one heavy application. Thin coats are recommended in the controller tutorial and in Krylon Harmony’s product instructions.
- Follow the selected product’s recoat directions. Timing and application details differ among coatings. Do not transfer one product’s schedule to another.
- Let the finish reach its specified cure stage. Krylon says Harmony is touch-dry in approximately one hour and fully cured in 24 hours; those times apply to that product, not to paint generally. Wait for the cure stage specified on your own product before handling parts for reassembly.
Reassemble and check the controls
Once the coating has reached its manufacturer-specified cure stage, remove masking carefully and reassemble according to the model’s instructions. Align parts without forcing them; Microsoft emphasizes correct alignment during Elite Series 2 reassembly and warns that components can be fragile. Check that seams close normally, buttons and thumbsticks move freely, and no paint has entered openings or moving interfaces. If a part does not fit or move correctly, stop rather than forcing it against a fresh finish or fragile clip.

Common ways to spoil the finish
- Using paint without checking plastic compatibility: the shell and coating may not be a suitable match. Verify the label and test an inconspicuous area.
- Skipping preparation: dust, residue, or an incompatible surface can undermine the coating. Clean and prepare as the selected product directs.
- Applying thick coats: heavy application can interfere with an even finish. Build color with thin coats.
- Painting into seams and controls: coating can interfere with fit or movement. Mask openings, joints, and functional surfaces before painting.
- Reassembling too soon: touch-dry is not necessarily fully cured. Use the product’s stated cure time, not a generic estimate.
- Opening the controller without model-specific instructions: clips and components can be damaged. Use the correct procedure and tools, or avoid disassembly.
