The available reports do not confirm that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei asked Meta’s Alexandr Wang for compute earlier in 2026, or that Meta declined such a request. They describe a separate, later-reported possibility: Anthropic proposed a potential compute lease to Meta in June, with discussions still early in July. That reporting does not establish that the alleged earlier conversation happened.

What is confirmed—and what is not

The claim in the original headline combines two assertions: that Amodei spoke with Wang earlier in the year to seek compute, and that Meta turned him down. The sources reviewed do not corroborate either part. They do not establish that the conversation took place, identify a refusal, or connect the claim to the later lease discussions.

Reuters reported in July 2026 that Anthropic had proposed a possible compute lease to Meta in June and that Meta was considering it. CNN Newsource separately reported that the companies were in early discussions. These are reports of a possible commercial arrangement, not confirmation of a completed deal or of the earlier alleged approach.

What the later compute-lease reports said

Reuters: a possible lease, not a signed agreement

On July 17, 2026, Reuters reported that the potential agreement could be worth up to $10 billion over two years. That was a reported possible value, not a confirmed contract amount. Reuters described the talks as early and complicated, and said they might not result in an agreement. It also reported that Meta did not have an existing business selling its computing power, a factor that complicated the discussions. Anthropic declined to comment; Meta did not immediately respond.

CNN Newsource: early discussions and speculative figures

Also on July 17, CNN Newsource described the discussions as early and characterized specific reported deal figures as speculative. Both companies declined to comment to CNN. Neither account confirms that Meta had previously rejected a request from Amodei to Wang.

Why Meta’s compute capacity was part of the story

Compute capacity is infrastructure used both to run AI services for customers and to train new models. Axios reported on April 2, 2026, that Anthropic faced capacity constraints amid rising customer demand. Its report also described a tension in the market: compute costs were falling while usage was rising rapidly. That context helps explain why Anthropic might seek additional capacity, but it is not evidence of a particular conversation with Meta.

In remarks at Meta’s May 2026 annual shareholder meeting, as reported by CNN Newsource and Reuters, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said companies were approaching Meta about buying access to its AI models or computing power. He said Meta had not sold compute because it expected to use the capacity itself, while adding that leasing could be an option if the company overbuilt. Those comments describe Meta’s general position; they do not prove that Meta declined Anthropic.

CNN Newsource also reported that Meta planned capital expenditures of $125 billion to $145 billion for 2026, with much of that spending directed toward infrastructure. That figure is Meta’s planned company-wide spending, not the value of the possible Anthropic lease.

How to read the reports

  • Separate the claims: the alleged earlier conversation with Wang and the later-reported lease proposal are distinct events unless further reporting establishes a connection.
  • Keep the timing straight: the reported proposal was made in June; the discussions were described as early in July.
  • Treat the terms as provisional: the potential value and other reported terms were not confirmed by either company, and the reports said talks could fail.
  • Do not infer a refusal: Zuckerberg’s general comments about leasing capacity do not establish how Meta responded to any specific Anthropic request.
