To build local search with Gemini on Google Cloud, ground the model with Google Maps for real-world place context, then use separate components for place discovery, route planning and answer orchestration. Use a custom search API or Agent Search instead when answers must come from your application’s own content; those systems are not substitutes for Maps data.
What Maps grounding adds to a local-search app
Grounding with Google Maps connects Gemini to Google Maps geospatial data so the application can answer questions with local context. Google says this data covers over 250 million places; the cited documentation does not state a publication year for that figure. Google Cloud’s Maps grounding documentation describes using this information to ground model responses.
For example, a user might ask for a nearby place that fits a need and whether it is open, then ask how to get there. Maps grounding can supply place evidence and source context; route planning is a distinct task. Grounding provides evidence for a generated answer, not a guarantee that changing details such as hours or availability are correct.

Separate place lookup, routing and orchestration
Google’s reference architecture assigns distinct responsibilities to an orchestrator, a Places agent, a Routes agent and a Schedule agent. The orchestrator interprets the user’s request and coordinates the relevant work; the Places agent handles discovery and place-status questions, while the Routes agent handles distances and travel planning. The Schedule agent is relevant when the task also involves a calendar.
#1 Best Overall
- 6” high-resolution navigator includes map updates of North America
- Hands-free calling when paired with your compatible smartphone with BLUETOOTH technology and convenient Garmin voice assist lets you ask for directions to places you want to go
- Road trip–ready features include the HISTORY database of notable sites, a U.S. national parks directory, Tripadvisor traveler ratings and millions of Foursquare POIs
- Driver alerts for things such as school zones, sharp curves and speed changes help encourage safer driving and increase situational awareness
- Access live traffic, fuel prices, parking, weather and smart notifications when you pair this navigator with your compatible smartphone running the Garmin Drive app
This is a reference pattern, not a required stack. The example includes Gemini Enterprise, ADK, Google Maps Platform, Calendar, Cloud Logging and Firestore. A simpler application can omit calendar and other components it does not need, while retaining the separation between place context, route planning and the part of the app that combines results. See Google Cloud Architecture Center’s Google Maps agent architecture for the full example.
Choose grounding by the content the user needs
| Approach | Best fit | Retrieval and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps grounding | Geographic and public place context | Google Maps data; Maps grounding responses can include place-answer source chunks with details such as names, addresses and reviews, along with source information and URIs. Google’s API reference documents the chunk representation. |
| Google Search grounding | Public web information beyond place context | Google-managed web retrieval. See Google Search grounding documentation. |
| Custom search API grounding | An existing application-controlled search service or proprietary content | Gemini sends a query to an endpoint; the endpoint returns JSON results containing snippet and uri. Your service controls the retrieved content and snippets. See Google’s custom search API guide. |
| Agent Search grounding | Private website or document data | Grounding uses retrieval context from the application’s data. See Google’s Agent Search grounding guide. |
These options answer different data needs: Maps for place context, Search for public web knowledge, and custom retrieval or Agent Search for application-owned or private content. Google documents combinations of Maps with Google Search and data grounding, but supported tool combinations depend on the API surface. Check the current Grounding API guidance before designing a request that combines tools.

Connect an existing search service when Maps is not the source
If the application already indexes its own content, custom search API grounding lets Gemini ask that service for results rather than treating Maps as an index of the application’s data. The documented contract is a POST request containing a query, with the endpoint returning a JSON array of results that include snippet and uri. Google’s guide emphasizes snippet quality, endpoint latency and error handling. It also requires an enabled Vertex AI API and a compatible endpoint; check the live guide for current model and request requirements.
Use this route for content the application controls. Use Agent Search when grounding should retrieve from private documents or website data through that service. Neither choice supplies the public place context that Maps grounding is intended to provide.

Make evidence and operational limits visible
Where the interface supports it, expose the source context returned with grounded answers so users can inspect supporting place information or follow a URI. Do not present grounded details as independently verified or permanently current: place status, hours and availability can change.
Scope each agent to a clear task, monitor events and outputs, and account for endpoint errors and latency if using custom retrieval. Google’s architecture guidance recommends caching frequently requested information, such as common routes or popular places, to reduce API calls. Cache policy should account for how quickly the underlying information can change. The architecture guide was reviewed May 1, 2026; see Google’s operational guidance.

Check current platform requirements before implementation
Supported models, availability, quotas, regional support and pricing may change. The cited documentation does not establish a complete regional deployment matrix or project-specific costs. Confirm current requirements and pricing in the applicable Google Cloud documentation before selecting a deployment or estimating spend. Tool-combination constraints can also vary by API surface, so verify the request configuration for the particular Gemini integration you plan to use.
