You can use a Sony Bravia as a smart TV if it has Google TV or Android TV: identify the model, connect it to the internet, and complete its on-screen setup. If the TV lacks usable built-in streaming, connect a compatible external streaming device instead. Bravia menus and features vary by model and software version, so start by checking the exact model number and its manual.
First, identify your Bravia’s TV platform
Find the model number on the TV’s label or in its settings, then open its Sony support page and manual. Sony’s setup instructions are specific to Android TV, and its screens and menu paths vary by model and operating-system version. Do not assume that instructions for one Bravia apply to another. Check whether the TV uses Google TV, Android TV, or another interface, and whether the apps you want are supported on that specific model. If it has Google TV or Android TV, use the built-in setup. If it does not, or its built-in apps are no longer usable, an external streaming device may be an option.

For a new or reset Android TV, follow the prompts displayed on the television. The exact sequence can vary, but Sony’s guidance describes choosing a language, connecting to the internet, and deciding whether to sign in to Google. Broadcast-channel tuning may also be part of initial setup. Sony’s first-time setup steps apply to Android TV models, not every Bravia generation.

- Turn on the TV and follow the on-screen setup wizard.
- Select the language and other requested preferences.
- Connect the TV to Wi-Fi or, if available and convenient, a wired LAN connection.
- Choose whether to sign in to a Google account. Sony says this can be skipped and completed later; some Google apps and services require an account.
- Complete any broadcast tuning or remaining prompts shown by the TV.
Connect the TV to Wi-Fi
Before starting, have your network name (SSID) and password ready. The password is case-sensitive, so enter capital letters and symbols exactly as configured on the router. Sony lists menu routes that can include Network & Internet → Wi-Fi, but the labels and location differ across models and software versions. Follow the path in the TV’s manual or on-screen menus. Sony’s Wi-Fi instructions include model-dependent options.
- Open the TV’s network or internet settings.
- Select Wi-Fi and choose your network name.
- Enter the password carefully, then confirm the connection.
- If you do not know the network name or password, check the router documentation or contact your internet provider.
If the TV does not connect, recheck the SSID and case-sensitive password, then consult the manual for the exact network menu and supported connection options. Do not assume every Bravia offers the same Wi-Fi or wired-network features.

Open apps and internet content
After an Android TV is connected, you can use the apps and internet content supported by that TV. Sony describes internet access and Google-account setup as part of its Android TV app guidance, but not every streaming service supports every Bravia model. Confirm service and app availability for your exact TV rather than relying on the platform name alone. Sony’s guide to apps and internet content on Android TV explains the built-in route.
When to use an external streaming device
If the TV lacks a built-in streaming platform, or its built-in apps cannot provide the services you need, an external streaming device can add a separate streaming interface. Sony includes streaming-device connections in its TV connection guide. Before buying one, check the Bravia manual for available inputs and supported connections, and confirm that the device works with the TV and the services you want.

Show content from a phone or tablet
Sony provides separate guidance for casting, AirPlay, screen mirroring, and Wi-Fi Direct. Which method works depends on the TV, the phone or tablet, and—in some cases—the region.
