You can play an MTS video directly on a TV only if that specific model supports the file’s format and codecs. Check the TV’s manual before converting files or buying equipment. If it lists AVCHD or MTS, try USB playback with the original AVCHD folder structure intact; if not, try connecting the camcorder or using a compatible media player.

Why an MTS file may not play

The .mts extension alone does not tell you whether a TV can play a clip. Compatibility depends on the TV model and, in some cases, the video and audio codecs inside the file. Manufacturer support lists vary: one Sony article for specific 2011 TV models marks MTS/M2TS AVCHD unsupported, while other Sony product documentation lists AVCHD support for different product contexts. These examples are not universal rules for all Sony TVs or all TVs. Check the official support information for your exact model.

Look up your TV’s complete model number and consult its official manual or support page. Check for USB video formats, AVCHD/MTS or M2TS support, video and audio codecs, and any stated resolution or frame-rate limits. A Panasonic manual for a particular model, for example, specifies AVCHD .mts with H.264 video and Dolby Digital audio; that is a model-specific combination, not a universal recipe for MTS playback. Panasonic’s model manual information illustrates why checking the exact model matters.

Try USB playback without changing the files

If your TV manual lists AVCHD or MTS support, connect the camcorder to the TV’s USB port or copy the footage to USB storage, then open the TV’s media viewer. Menu labels differ by model; some Sony guides use paths such as Home, then Photos/Music/Videos, followed by the USB device. Use the instructions for your TV rather than assuming the same menu path applies to every model. Sony’s BRAVIA connectivity guide describes USB camera and camcorder playback.

When transferring footage, copy the full camera-created AVCHD directory if possible, not just the visible MTS clip. A typical Sony path is /AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.MTS. Some devices depend on the AVCHD folder structure; Panasonic warns that changing it may prevent playback, and Philips says some of its players cannot play standalone MTS/M2TS clips. Keep an untouched backup before reorganizing, deleting, or formatting anything. Sony’s guide, Philips’ AVCHD guidance, and Panasonic’s manual information describe these product-specific requirements.

If USB playback does not work, try another route

Connect the camcorder directly

If the TV does not list MTS/AVCHD support, a direct camcorder-to-TV connection may still work, depending on the camera and TV. Follow the connection instructions in both devices’ manuals and select the TV input or media viewer specified there. A camera connection is a separate option from copying files to a USB drive, but it is not guaranteed to work with every combination.

Use a compatible external player

A Blu-ray or network media player can be a workaround if its own manual explicitly lists MTS, M2TS, or AVCHD playback from USB. Sony’s 2025 support table lists transport-stream MTS/M2TS and AVCHD folder support over USB for certain compatible player products; that does not establish support across its entire player range. Check the exact player model and its folder requirements before buying or transferring files. Sony’s player support table and Philips’ AVCHD guidance show why model-specific verification matters.

Convert only as a last resort

Conversion may produce a file the TV accepts, but there is no universal MTS-to-TV preset established by these manufacturer materials. Use the target TV’s supported-format list to choose the output container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, and frame rate. Keep the original footage unchanged and test a short copy before converting an archive. A USB drive does not make an unsupported format compatible, and converting to MP4 is not a guaranteed fix.

Troubleshoot a file the TV can see but cannot play

If the file appears in the TV’s media browser but playback fails, work through these checks:

  • Confirm the codecs. Compare the clip’s video and audio codecs with the exact TV manual. A supported extension does not guarantee that every file encoded with it will work.
  • Restore the AVCHD structure. If you copied only a standalone MTS clip, try again with the full camera-created folder hierarchy.
  • Check the player’s own limits. For an external player, verify that its manual supports the file type and USB playback mode you are using.
  • Test a fresh copy. Preserve the original and try a short, unmodified copy before changing files or converting them.

Sony’s BRAVIA guide cautions: “Depending on the file, playback may not be possible even for the supported formats.” The practical implication is that a format listing is a useful first check, not a guarantee for every clip. Sony BRAVIA Connectivity Guide.

Route What to verify File handling Extra equipment
TV USB playback Exact TV manual lists MTS/AVCHD and the clip’s relevant codecs Keep the AVCHD folders intact when available USB storage may be needed
Camcorder connection Camera and TV manuals support the connection and playback method Play from the camera rather than extracting clips Uses the camcorder and a compatible connection
External media player Exact player manual lists MTS/M2TS or AVCHD over the intended USB mode May require AVCHD folders Requires a compatible player if you do not already have one
Convert a copy TV manual specifies a supported container, codecs, and relevant limits Preserve originals; test a short copy first Requires a conversion workflow
