A digital audio socket is a physical input or output that carries digital audio between devices. On consumer electronics, the label usually refers to an S/PDIF connection: either optical, often marked “Optical Audio” or “TOSLINK,” or coaxial, often marked “Digital Coaxial.” The two use different ports and cables, so check both devices before connecting them.
What does “digital audio socket” mean?
It is a broad name for a device’s physical connection for digital audio. It may be an output that sends audio to a soundbar, receiver or other audio device, or an input that receives audio. The phrase alone does not identify the connector type; check the device’s label and the shape of the opening.
Consumer devices commonly use S/PDIF. That name refers to the digital audio interface or format, not just one physical connector. S/PDIF may use optical or coaxial connections, which are related but not interchangeable. Philips lists labels that can include “S/PDIF,” “Digital Audio,” “Optical Audio,” “TOSLINK” and “Digital Coaxial” on its support page.
How can you tell whether the socket is optical or coaxial?
| Connection | Common labels | Physical connection and cable |
|---|---|---|
| Optical | Optical Audio, Optical, TOSLINK or S/PDIF | Uses a fiber-optic cable. Use an optical/TOSLINK cable with matching optical ports. |
| Digital coaxial | Digital Coaxial, Coaxial or S/PDIF | Uses an RCA-type connector and suitable digital coaxial cable. Use it with matching coaxial digital ports. |
Labels vary by device, and a shared S/PDIF label does not mean the ports have the same shape. Sony describes the optical connection as using a fiber-optic cable in its digital optical and digital coaxial comparison.

- 【192 kHz Optical to RCA Converter】AUTOUTLET 192kHz DAC converter is designed for professional audio signal processing. 192 kHz optical to RCA male cable can directly connect to stereo amplifier and convert optical toslink digital audio signals to RCA analog audio signal
- 【Excellent Sound Quality】Our dac audio converter adopts a built-in professional audio amplifier chip and a dual-channel operational amplifier, which can amplify the RCA output level and make the sound pure and clear
- 【Professional Input Signal Processing】Analog to digital audio converter provides professional 24Bit/192KHz sampling rate, avoiding distortion of the original signal. Optical input supports signal processing up to 32, 44.1, 48, 96, 192 sample rates, and 24-bit bit streams
- 【Plug and Play】SPDIF to RCA converter works great with HDTVs, set-top boxes, DVD/Blu-Ray players and game consoles. (NOTE: It is incompatible with 5.1 channel signal such as Dolby AC3, please adjust the audio output to PCM before use.)
- 【Note】Before using the product, adjust the audio output format of the TV to PCM (Device Home→System Settings→Picture and Sound→Sound Settings→Digital Audio Output→PCM), and Volume can only be adjusted on the output device, not via the TV remote control. In addition, the product does not support connection to headphones
How do you connect a digital audio socket?
- Check the source device’s audio output. Find its label and identify whether the port is optical or digital coaxial.
- Check the receiving device’s audio input. It must have the matching connection type for a direct cable connection.
- Use the cable for that connection. Connect matching optical ports with an optical/TOSLINK cable, or matching coaxial digital ports with a digital coaxial cable.
- Select the correct input and audio settings. Follow the manuals for the specific devices; supported formats and required settings can vary by model.
What if one device is optical and the other is coaxial?
A cable alone cannot make an optical port match a coaxial one. You need a signal converter that accepts the source’s connection type and outputs the type required by the receiving device. Check the converter’s direction and supported audio formats before buying or connecting it.
If the receiving equipment has only analog inputs, a digital-to-analog converter may be needed instead. Philips discusses that kind of connection in its connection guidance.

- 【Optical to 3.5mm Converter】Optical audio cable to aux converts converts optical (SPDIF/Toslink) digital audio signals to stereo 3.5mm AUX port output.(Not reversible: Cannot be used to transfer audio from 3.5mm to optical)
- 【Supports 192kHz Sampling Rate】The optical audio cable to aux achieves a high-quality sound sample rate of 192KHz and supports optical inputs at 32, 44.1, 48, 96, and 192KHz as well as data streams at 24-bit,Enhance your audio experience with precise details.
- 【NOTE】Please set audio output to PCM or Stereo mode before use. Here is how to set the PCM format.Sams TV: Settings - Sound - Expert Settings - Audio Format-PCM.LG TV: Menu - All Settings - Sound Output - Optical- Digital Sound Output - PCM,S-ny TV: PCM setting path: Device main page - system settings - image and sound - sound settings - digital audio output - PCM
- 【Note】That it is not compatible with 5.1-channel audio signals like Dolby AC3 and DTS. Make sure to set your device’s audio output to PCM for optimal performance.【Note】The TV's audio cannot be controlled via the remote control during use. If you need to adjust the volume, please do so using headphones or speakers.
- 【Compatibility】This fiber optic port is for TV audio output only and does not support game consoles, PS4,PS5, projectors, or other devices. The 3.5mm jack is for connecting headphones or speakers to receive audio signals. Reverse operation is not supported.
Does optical sound better than digital coaxial?
Both connections carry digital audio, but they use different physical interfaces. There is no basis for saying one always sounds better in every setup. First choose a connection supported by both devices; then consider practical factors such as the available ports, cable routing and your devices’ audio-format support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich audio formats will the socket support?
The words “digital audio” or “S/PDIF” by themselves do not establish which formats a particular input or output supports. Check both device manuals for supported formats and any output settings that must be changed. Philips’ general connection examples apply to the TV models covered by its support article, so model-specific instructions should take precedence.

Standards documents provide wider context but do not define every consumer device’s behavior. ISO/IEC 16500-4:1999 covers physical delivery media including coaxial cable and fiber for generic digital audiovisual systems; ISO says that edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2021. An IEC 60958-1:2021 catalog excerpt describes digital audio interface requirements and labeling, but it is a secondary catalog entry rather than an IEC source page.
