A smart TV that turns on unexpectedly is often responding to a power-on timer, an HDMI-connected device using HDMI-CEC, or a supported network or mobile wake feature. A stuck remote button or temporary software problem can also be responsible. Check the settings and connected devices first; the exact menu names and available features depend on your TV model, year, region, and equipment.
What can turn a smart TV on by itself?
- A power-on timer: A scheduled timer may be set to turn on the TV automatically.
- HDMI-CEC: This feature lets connected devices control a TV through HDMI, including waking it. LG calls its implementation Simplink; Samsung calls it Anynet+.
- Network or mobile wake: Some TVs can be switched on by a phone or other supported network feature. Availability and settings vary.
- A remote-control button: A stuck power button can send an unintended command.
- A temporary software issue: A power cycle or software update may help if the settings and connected devices do not explain the behavior.
LG USA Support lists HDMI-connected devices as a possible trigger, including a device in standby for automatic updating. Its explanation appears in “LG TV – Why Does My TV Turn On By Itself”.
How to find the trigger
Test one possibility at a time. After each change, leave the TV in standby long enough to see whether the unexpected wake happens again. If you disconnect or disable several things at once, you may stop the behavior without learning which one caused it.
- Turn off any power-on timer. Open the TV’s settings and look for a Timer, On Timer, or Power On option. Disable any scheduled power-on entry. Names and menu paths differ by model and year. Sony also lists a power-on timer as a possible cause in its “The TV turns on automatically” troubleshooting guide.
- Test HDMI-CEC. Turn off the TV’s HDMI-CEC setting—Simplink on LG or Anynet+ on Samsung—and disable the corresponding control feature on connected devices, if available. Alternatively, temporarily unplug HDMI devices. If the TV stops waking, reconnect devices one at a time and observe which connection brings the behavior back. A connected device can send a wake signal even while in standby. See LG’s HDMI-CEC guidance and Samsung Australia’s troubleshooting page.
- Review network and mobile wake settings, if your TV has them. On supported Samsung TVs, check for “Power On with Mobile” and related network settings. Turning mobile wake off also prevents turning on the set through SmartThings. Samsung recommends checking event logs where available; its page says the “About TV” event-log feature applies to products manufactured in 2019 or later. Menu availability and paths vary by model and purchase location.
- Check the remote. Inspect the power button for sticking or obstruction. As a short isolation test, remove the remotes from the room and see whether the TV still turns on.
- Update and power-cycle the TV. Check the TV’s settings for a software update. For a power cycle, follow the instructions for your specific model. Sony recommends unplugging the TV for 60 seconds. LG describes a procedure of unplugging the TV, holding its power button for 30 seconds, leaving it unplugged for five minutes, and reconnecting it. Do not assume the procedures are interchangeable; consult the applicable support page or manual.
Which test should you try first?
| Test | What it checks | Disruption and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Disable the power-on timer | Scheduled power-on | Low disruption; you give up any automatic turn-on schedule. |
| Disable HDMI-CEC or disconnect HDMI devices temporarily | A connected device waking the TV | Disabling CEC can remove device-to-TV control; disconnecting devices interrupts their use. Restore devices one at a time to isolate a trigger. |
| Disable mobile or network wake, if supported | A phone or network feature waking the TV | On supported Samsung TVs, disabling mobile wake also removes SmartThings app-based power-on. |
| Remove remotes from the room | A stuck or unintentionally pressed remote button | Brief inconvenience; the test does not identify other possible triggers. |
| Power-cycle or update | A temporary software problem or available software fix | The TV is briefly unavailable during the test or update. Use model-specific instructions. |
If the TV still turns on after these checks, consult the manufacturer’s support page or manual for your model, then contact the manufacturer or arrange service if needed. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish one cause as the most common across all smart TVs.
